Went to the dark side :) Love this bike - torque everywhere, completely unlike any inline 4 (granted I have not ridden the '15 R1 yet)

lol, that's not what I meant :X I'm actually a member on the Ducati forum and there are a lot of knowledgeable and helpful people on there. If he wants to stay on the R1 forum that's fine too.

I was originally debating between a Duc.1098, 2012+ CBR 1000RR, and an R1 2004-2006. I never found the other two bikes in my price range but after about a year of looking I got a steal on my R1 and I'm a very, very happy owner. I'm a debt free home and vehicle owner and I didn't want to get into debt over a motorcycle so I only looked at what I could pay for in cash. Paid $4900 for my baby and it came with about $4K in performance mods :D

Word is they might? But the concept sketches I've seen don't look good - in an attempt to look "modern" these manufacturers keep coming up with designs that look like something out of Transformers. That's why I like the FD RX-7, yes it's a '93, but still looks good and kicks ass (370 rwhp, 2800 lbs)

It's actually quite the opposite. Since the tettestratta 11 motor was introduced, reliability has drastically risen tenfold. I've heard of motors blowing on the 1199's if you race it or track it, but that's after ~4k miles of pure track use.
Aside from that, valve adjustments or clearance checks have risen from every 8k miles to 16k miles, and service intervals are very similar to that of a Jap bike. In year's past yes, they've been extremely unreliable and costly. However, Duc finally got the picture that people want reliability if they're paying a premium. Two of my close friends have a garage full of Duc's, ranging from 848's to 1299's, not a single problem with any of them the past three years.

I'm a member on the duc forums too and I almost backed out of my 1098 because of that place lol The good thing is there are some really helpful guys on that site.

"it's like dating a hot chick, there a few things you have to put up with, but the ride is well worth the effort" totally agree with this.
I don't know if this is the same for you rx7man but when i'm on my Duc i feel as if my shit don't stink for some reason

My bro and I both had 2012 Diavels with tettestrata engines and both leaked engine oil from case gasket. No track time, 6500 and 12000 km's on the clock. Worst part is both were out of warranty, $365 each to replace gaskets!!

Still of the mind that while ducati's sound awesome, and are very exotic in design and features, I still am not a fan of any of the ones I've been involved with due to either their lack of comfort or reliability. 2 year warranty or not, I don't care for the idea of purchasing a bike while planning to USE the warranty, lol.

Beautiful, powerful, and fun for sure, hopefully it serves you better than the ones I've been around!

The 1199s have been fairly reliable, I expect the 1299 to be as good or better in that regard.

It was time for something different, I've ridden Japanese 4s for 25 years - torque is fun, especially on mountain roads

Funny, I thought coming to Yamaha was going to the dark, dark side! LOL! I've been a Duc guy since 94. I've had Honda and Suzuki liter bikes, but my last two were the 1199 Tricolore and now my current 1199 Panigale R. My R is for sale now, since Japan decided to build the bike of my dreams, R1M!

1299 is awesome, ridden the S a lot, as we have a demo. Love my R more. However, the more I read about the M the more I want one.

It has the components that turn me on, which is why I ride Ducati's.

My duc stable included 1098S, 848 converted to 1040 (current track bike), 1199 Panigale S Tricolore and 1199 Panigale R. But I'm going to sell the R and join the dark side on a R1M if I can!

Prob loose my job, since we sell Ducati, MV Agusta, KTM, Triumph and Suzuki. Imagine my boss when I commute to work on a Yamaha!

Enjoy your 1299, awesome bike and the latest Ducati don't have major reliability issues. They are made by hand and weak examples get filtered through, which is what 2 year warranty is about!
