EXUP issue? I can't go over 7K RPMs.

It looks like a previous owner did the same mod to my R1. Up until now it has run great - but the other day it started to limit my RPM's to 7k which limited the speed to about 100mph. There are no error messages on the display.

In searching for the problem online, I found that a problem with the exup system can cause the bike to limit the rpm's to 7k. Not sure if this is true, took off the cowlings and it had been modded with the bolt/washer set up. The cables are still in place but not connected.

Any ideas?

Thx.

What type of exhaust do you have on your bike? Stock? Aftermarket? Full system or slipons? :dunno

If you have OEM headers then your EXUP valve is still there and the cables need to be hooked up. If you have aftermarket headers then there is no EXUP valve on your bike and the cables can be removed, but do not remove the EXUP motor. If the motor is removed then you will get error codes on your cluster from the ECU. :fact

Probably wouldnt be a bad idea to remove those cables either from the Ex-up Motor. I just did mine, did the washer and bolt thing, and removed the cables. This is true about the error codes if you pull the ex-up motor out, you will need a resistor or I think someone makes a plug or something for it.

If it has a bolt and washer in it, there's no way the Ex-up valve is in there, its 1 solid piece. Heres a few pics when I did mine..

Seems weird that the Ex-Up would cause this, and not relay a code or error, but I guess anything is possible...

The Shift indicator light is selectable, but shouldnt have any hinderance on performance, it just lights up letting you know your at the "Set" RPM.

thats interesting that the bike is doing that with no valve in the exhaust. I know a few months ago when i was drag racing my cables came loose and it wouldnt let the bike rev above 9k because of to much back pressure. I would suggest pulling the cover off and making sure nothing is stuck in there. Sounds dumb I know but it doesnt hurt to try.

i had the exact same problem with my 06 and what i have to say is kind of embarrasing. i bought the bike used from a stealership about 5 months ago and took it to them numerous times and they couldnt figure out the problem. problem = after about an hour of riding the bike wouldnt go over 8k rpm. long story short...it was my fuel pump. not only the fuel pump but i had so much rust (luckily a lot was just surface rust, but also flakes) in the gas tank that it was blockiing the fuel from getting sucked in the pump. yea major issue i thought. well i got lucky and someone on this forum sold me his old fuel pump and i cleaned the gas tank out with mieral spirits (home depot) and scouring pad. now bike runs perfect! i REALLY hope this isnt your problem. if it is then im sorry. couple hours of work, wasted fuel in tank, and a little...ok a lot of elbow grease and bike runs perfect! good luck
