Hello all. New to the forum and R1 ownership in general. There seems to be a huge wealth of knowledge in this forum so I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recently bought my first sport bike After wanting one for a few years. I got what I thought was a decent deal on a 2012 Yamaha R1 TC. 9000 miles. Full graves exhaust. PCV. No other mods.

PCV removed with zero results then Re-installed.

I got the bike home and went to start it next day and it turns over but backfires consistently and will not start. Fuel pump turns on. Battery is at 126-12.8V. Doesn’t sound sluggish when starting at all. Just pops and sputters when cranking. This being my first R1, admittedly I don’t know much about the mechanics or common issues associated with them. Again, any help would be great.

thanks.

TPS sensor could be bad. There is a test for this with volt meter.
But maybe you replaced the wires connections back incorrectly when removing PCV? Also could have pinched the Fuel line under the tank.

Could be. Haven’t checked the fuel line. Everything was replaced correctly. I am new to sport bike ownership but not to motorcycles or mechanics. Historically Harley’s. Which goes hand in hand with working on your bike. 😂 I’ll check that fuel line for kinks. 🤙🏻

Lifted tank. Doesn’t seem to be any signs of pinched lines and they’ don’t seem soft enough to collapse. Looks like it may be time for a starter.

anyone have a link to one that’s reputable? If I’m gonna have to tear half the bike apart to replace it, I’d rather not have to do it all that often. 😂

Try giving it a very small amount of throttle while starting it. If it eventually starts while doing this, there's a good chance it's the starter. Mine would backfire while trying to start as well. And would only start with throttle applied. New starter fixed it. Good luck.

Tried the addition of a small amount of throttle. No change.

I'm not too sure about the year you have, but it did sound similar to my 2015 R1. It can crank but can not fire-up and produce loud popping due to too much fuel in the chamber. After being checked by a mechanic, it turned out to be the crank position sensor. It was having an issue as it can not detect the correct firing sequence.

Did you recently flash the ECU? Maybe using the EU ecu image? The EU/Canadian image has a diifrent firing order (in the way that the wires come out of the ECU pins) than the US ECU.

No sir. No recent flashes. No check engine light either.
Have you put it in diagnostic mode? What are both TPS values reading? What are both APS values reading?

Funny you should ask. I was just about to comment my findings. 😂

D:01 - 16 closed. 71 open.
D:13 - 18 closed. 76 open
D:14 - 17 closed. 100 open
D:15 - 17 closed. 100 open

would seem that TPS is out of value and APS are within spec.

I would recommend pulling the tps and test it off the throttle body. And test it out of the bike with a multimeter. Might need a new one.

I've also heard that the crank position sensor can cause a no start as well.
