Has anyone ever swapped engines from a newer bike?

I'm not considering this, but I was just wondering if it had ever been done. At the track I often see people with TONS of money dropped into their bikes, but then of course they still become outdated and down on power when newer bikes come out. Lots of guys part out the bike and upgrade, then re-buy the same parts for the newer bike after a while, so I was wondering if anyone had ever kept their custom parts and just upgraded the engine "with some pretty serious fabrication skills".

I've seen that one too, he was on this forum. The 07-08 R1 had variable v-stack heights which was really cool, but besides that it was really similar to the 04-06. I think the fairings are an easy swap too, almost the same bike.

What would it take for example to fit a 2016 ZX10R/BMWS1000RR/R1 into a 2004-2010 R1/GSXR/CBR/ZX10 ? Are the sizes that far off on a relatively modern bike? I know the mounting points would be different.

It'd be next to near impossible to try and shoehorn any engine into a different frame... especially across brands

The engine on most modern superbikes is part of the structural integrity of the frame, and the frame is going to be made to fit the engine, so the dimensions of the engine would be more of a concern than mounting points, IMO.

Could it be done? Sure, just about anything *CAN* be done, but that $20k of parts you don't want to replace would probably be a drop in the hat compared to the fab and R&D costs to modify a frame to take a different engine (properly/professionally, some moron could probably make it *FIT* much cheaper)

the great thing about riding bikes is that we can experience the power and handling of the best supercars. for pennies on the dollar. im satisfied for the most part with what yamaha gives me. i dont see a reason in spending time and money on a swap that produces very little over a very well engineered product.
