Hey everybody!

I am currently in the market for my first 1000cc bike! I had many 600's but time to grow a lil and get an R1! I love the 02-03 models, and they are about my price range! My question to you is How many miles on an R1 engine is too high? I see average mileages being 18,100 miles (30,000kms) and some bikes that are about 38,000 MILES on them (63,000KMS). Now a bike with this kind of miles, would you say it's really high... or just depends? I'd hate to buy a bike with the engine on its way out! But then again would i be getting a really good deal, due to the bike having high miles, and the average buyers tend to shy away from it???

And what are some of the things I should look for?

I appreciate all suggestions! Can't wait to post my new baby's pics on here!!

Thanks, everybody! ( Sorry if I have seemed to blab on ...;) )

I've heard of guys on here still running their 02-03 models with 40000+ miles I wouldn't buy one though with anything over 15k but that's just me

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this but isn't there an R1 on here with 100k on the clock?

As of today

That was yesterday but I drive 94 miles a day every day not weekends
You 2 have made my day. I've wondered how much I'd get out of my R1. I've got an 07 with the only mods is the race baffles in the stock mufflers. As of today I have 57,500 miles on it and that's with it sitting for 4 years due to living so close to work it was faster to just drive then to gear up and ride. I'm still on my original clutch to. I hope this thing goes another 50k !

wow amazing guys! especially R1SideWayZ 115336MI!!!!! Damn, apperently just like anything else.. Depends on how the miles were put on... Iam sure Judging by the physical look of the bike vs the miles youd be able to make a good assumption! Of course taking her our for a pre purchase test run!

Thanks for all the info guys!

37,000 on my 04, and I was out of the country for two years. I have laid her down a few times, once at around 80 mph, but she just keeps asking for more. I have also taken her to the track. Run her hard and no problems. Need to do an oil change but she is good. I love this freaking bike!!!

Well it was not an R1 but my FZR had 65k on it when I got my R1. Only did a valve adjust and carb sync on it. Like i said not an R1 but a testament to yamaha durability to say the least..

This is part of the perception problem. Most bikes are secondary vehicles for people. Only being used for short trips typically on weekends.

Winter comes around and the use drops to near zero for most people.

Sometimes people let them sit all winter with bad gas, old carbed engines etc. So when spring comes around they don't fire up and run right without a tune up.

This all leads to the perception that bikes are "high mileage" when they have only 15-20-30k on them.

Ride it, take care of it and it will run as long as any car.

Alright, I still have my 2k VFR with 40k and love the bike - especially for touring. My VFR was my daily ride and I use it on the track also. Wanna get the mods done on the R1 and take it to the track. I have to do some work on mine, but the VFR V4 engine will do 100k +.
