How do I Identify the year of my Bike???

I apologise if this has been already covered but I am not going to trawl through 1000s of posts for the answer as the search has already failed me.

I am sure my R1 is a 04 model, but as it was bought just as the first of the 06 models came out, it may be an early 05 model, given the paint scheme (lava red / solid black lowers)

Is there a resource here or a chart so i can ID by frame or Engine Number whether my bike is a K4 or K5? (Excuse the Suzuki euphanism!)

I have had the TPS recall done on the bike

Many Thanks in anticipation of yr help

10th letter of the vin is the date code I belive? Do a search on vins I'm sure you'll come up with something. Usually the years is on the vin also, not sure about UK bikes?

Why look at that...the vin sticker will just say what year it was made...pretty simple.

And how did you buy a bike that dont' know what year it is?

I suggest running up and down the interstate at about 130. Shortly, you'll be pulled over and once the officer runs your plate he'll be able to tell you what year it is. Completely foolproof. :fact

LMFAO!!! Awesome Kmac! Is that how you found out what year yours was? I can't tell if mine's an 05' or an 85'. Oh well, off to the interstate

LOL....:sneaky :sneaky My secret has been rumbled:sing:

Seriously though, My suzuki made it easy by being a K3.

Yamaha and Kawasaki seem to have this knack of making it a little more difficult to Identify.

Thanks to all with the constructive comments. I am satisfied now that it is an '04 model.

The date on the VIN plate is actually a build date (mo/yr), and not the model year. As you know when we are seeing these 07's and saw the 06's hitting the showroom floors before the new year the build date on them actually is going to say 06...but is it an 06 model year? No.

Now the 04's and 05's I believe are different, they were actually built in the year of their model. So he should have been able to check if it was a US bike. Very odd that it would not have a build date on the VIN plate though.

But, like someone else said...it should be in the VIN. A little research and you can see what each letter/number means.

A- It just happened, impulse buy.

B- Title (as you call it - I call it invoice) Does not have it on it

C- Insurance agent groups the bike in Group 17 irrespective of age so in my case on my insurance its "YZF-R1 (04-06)"

D- Goes on the VIN number and colour

E- Fair enough, but "Nice R1-How much was it"? was the most common question.

Can I stress here, we do not have a VIN plate on these bikes, mine in particular. My VIN number is on the Starboard side of the headstock.

As I said, thanks to those who helped me.

Sure..........

These were taken on the day I got the bike.

If needs be, i'll get another, though I am sure you can all take my word for it. Also note the original plate. The "55" means the bike is registered between 01-09-2005 and 28-02-2006.
