How many of you gear the newer R1s?

I have a 07 and was thinking of gearing it -1 maybe something in the rear.

How many gear the R1 and what ratio?

Lot's of guys re-gear the newer R1's; however, you do not want to go -1 in the rear. Most popular combo is +2 in the rear or just -1 in the front. Some riders will even do both which is a little to much for me and will make it a wheelie monster and throw you speedo accuracy out of wack even more than it already is.

hey i guess i could ve miss wrote that, I meant -1 in front and maybe (+1, +2)something up in the rear. It seems like lots of guys do regear the newer r1s but I was wondering is it because yamaha has geared the r1 more for track use only?
or are we in the need of modding?

It really depends on how you ride. You're right that Yamaha has the bike geared tall so it can put power down longer through a gear and get a higher top-end at the track. The downside to that is that around town and in tight twisties, you end up having to be in a lower, less-smooth gear to keep the RPMs up and you don't accelerate off the line as quickly.

I guess the question to ask yourself is, when you're riding the way YOU normally ride, do you ever feel like you'd want more torque, more "pull", even if it means giving up a little top-end and possibly shifting more frequently?

i went -1 in the front on my 07 and like it alot. it made it more suited for the street. if i get a chance to do track days i'll probably throw the stock sprocket back on, but for now it's good.

Hey guys thanks- thats the answer i was looking for. I figured as much but wanted some experenced people giving the answer. I assume ill get the same results like i did when i geared my other bikes. So for now itll be -1 for me.
what ratios are most of you using for street? also not wanting to lose to much top end.

I run -1/+2. This ratio will increase your revs by about 1000 at highway cruising speed. I'm happy with it, but I would've probably been happy with -1/+1 too.

I would stay away from any hunting gear ratio (i.e. 15T front and 45T rear) or any gear ratio that is exactly divisible. I may just be over cautious, but I don't want to risk any added wear.

Good Luck.

yea...just dropped a tooth on the counter shaft...worked awesome. didnt drop my top by that much, but the top speed is much more reachable now...ie, you can get to it on a straight that you normally couldnt reach that speed before. and it pulls through the gears alot better. i wouldnt gear it any lower, but where i live its long, sweepers and straightaways, or really tight winds. no inbetween.

Question;
does +2 in the rear = -1 in the front?(same ratio with -1 front or+2 rear)
I was never a math guru, but here it goes. Stock gearing is a 17T front and a 45T rear ... so

1. Stock ratio would be 45/17= 2.64

2. -1/+2 ratio would be 47/16 = 2.93

3. +0/+2 ratio would be 47/17 = 2.76

4. -1/+0 ratio would be 45/16 = 2.81

5. -1/+1 ratio would be 46/16 = 2.87

... so I guess the answer to your question is no, the -1 front is a little lower than the +2 rear.

Hope that helps.

There's a link to a calculator in one of these gear threads. You should be able to search and find it. I don't remember all of them, but I believe with my setup -1/+2 will top out around 170 now. (+ or - a few mph's)

I'm at -1/+2 right now... might go to -1/+1 as the way it is now... she really wants to wheelie... but she does have wicked acceleration! :fact

I too dropped one tooth on the front. Don't see the need for 300kmph and it improved the ridability. Having said that though, I've still done 299 indicated with a corrected speedo.
Going -1/+2 would probably be a little over kill as she already powerstands in 3rd.

Make sure you get a speedo-healer! It gave me the shits that the speedo, trip, and odo were out.

As was mentioned above, it's quite important to make sure your sprockets aren't properly divisible (eg: 15/45). This is for chain and sprocket wear.

Other than the powercommander, which cleaned up the curves, probably the best mod I've done. Best part? It's cheap as chips and you can do it yourself with basic tools and a little common sense.

I live in a city and love the hell out of the -1/+2 I could never to go back. Darting in and out of traffic makes this setup a must have. She pulls like a beast, and easily keeps pace with the GSXR's and their midrange now...That said, on the freeway when not in rush hour, I really miss the tall 6th gear. -Shaun

I stuck with the 530.

-1 on front, cheap, easy, perfect.

No, not really, just thinking about trying something new once my rear sprocket wears out. But she is a wheelie monster.

After a tuned full race exhaust system went on I no longer feel the need to re-gear.
I can't use full throttle in the lower gears as a result anyway so re-gearing isn't going to help me. It's a wheelie monster now on normal gearing.
Maybe this is because I'm not as big as the stereotypical American as I only weigh 175 lbs ;-)

+2 at the rear here, I like it, does good wheelies and accelerates like crazy

I dont know how it affects top speed but I ride all street at the moment, so I dont use the top speed anyways
