HealTech Electronics, makers of the SpeedoHealer, now has the GIPro-X gear indicator. This is a relatively small unit for easy positioning and is easy to read. The installation is fairly simple as it plugs into your harness and you need to tap into two wires.

NOTE: There have been a few different revisions on this product so it may be slightly different depending on the version you have. I will cover the two variations that I know of.

This How-To was written by installing it on a 2007 R1. Be sure to consult your service manual's wiring diagram to ensure you are connecting to the correct wires.

In order to install the GIPro-X, you'll need to remove the tank and the seat on your bike. I like to be safe, and prefer to disconnect the battery as well. Also, when working with electrical plugs/connections, I like to put a little bit of dielectric grease in there to help prevent corrosion.

The GIPro-X harness plugs into the speed sensor coupler. This is a black-and-white connection as shown below:

With the harness plugged in:

Next, you'll want to find a switched power source. This is a power source that is only on with the ignition turned on. I opted to connect to the red/white wire shown below. This is the power feed to the starter solenoid. But, you can connect it elsewhere such as a light source wire.:

Here is where it may depend on what revision you have on the GIPro-X indicator:

On most of the GIPro-X units, you should be able to tap into the crankshaft sensor wire. This is the dark gray wire on the neutral-colored two-wire connector. There is also a light gray, or off-white, colored wire which runs alongside it. Be certain you tap into the dark gray wire as shown in this photo:

If you have an early-release model, there will be no version numbers on the packaging and you will most likely need to tap into a different wire than mentioned above. If this is the case, you'll need to tap into the yellow/black tachometer wire which goes into the computer. The wire is indicated in the picture below. Be careful to make sure you have the correct wire as there is another yellow/black wire two positions over.

From here, route the harness on the left side of the frame along with the other wires. Be careful to ensure it won't get snagged by anything, including the shift linkage. I'll most likely install it on the left side of the instrument cluster as shown.

Now that you have the GIPro-X gear indicator installed, it needs to learn the gear positions. This will only take a couple of minutes and is best performed while on a rear stand for safety reasons.

When you turn the ignition on, you should see the gear indicator countdown from 6 to 1 and then change to an "L" and flash slowly. Start the bike up, with your foot on the rear brake and with it in neutral. You should see the "L" flashing more rapidly. It should then change to a "1" at which point you will shift into first gear and let the clutch out. Bring the bike to about 3,000 rpm and it will start to learn. It will do the same for 2nd through 6th gear.

Note: If on startup, you see an "E" flashing, step on the rear brake to stop the wheel from turning. This will most likely cure the error and allow you to continue the learning process.

If you ever need to relearn the gear positions, cycle the key five times. On the sixth time, you will see a "C". Turn the key off briefly and start the bike to begin the relearn process.

There you have it. A nice, relatively simple-to-install product for your R1. :thumbup

Thanks, Dan. Was a fun project and the timing was perfect while I was doing some prep work for next track season.

If you do get one, and have any issues, hit me up and I'll be glad to help out as I can.

Damn good write up.
What color back light did you opt for?

Thanks. It's a red indicator. I'll get a finalized picture of it mounted as plastics on within a day or so. :)

The install was exactly the same on my 04, and I mounted the display in the same place, but I was too lazy to take pictures :dundun:
The only thing I did different was the switched live. I just tapped into the feed for the rear brake light switch under the tank.

Great write up :thumbup

The brake light was mentioned in the intructions. But, I opted for the location I did as this is a pure track bike and I'm removing as much unnecessary wiring as possible which includes most lighting pigtails, etc.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Glad to hear it's beneficial :thumbup

I would definately reccomend the Healtech, the response is very fast unlike some of the others that I've tried.
I had an Acumen Digi8 Ithink it was called, and there was quite a lag between shifting gears and the indicator showing the new gear selected.
You won't have that issue with the GIPro-X type :)

I just order mines a few days ago. Thanks for the write up it sure is going to make my set up easier. I am also planning to make this track only bike very soon. So wiring it this way will help when I gut it out.

Thanks for the how-to.
I got mine in the mail today.

I installd Gipro-x with GPX-Y01 harness kit on my bike yesterday and on my 2004 model right wire was light gray wire, not dark..? :dundun:

There may be some differences due to model year of the bikes. Mine was an '07 so I wrote it up for that year. I did mention to consult the service manual for your particular bike to ensure you're connecting to the correct wire. :thumbup

Here's a link to the updated install directions:

4. Find the 2-pole natural (or black) color plug of the Crankshaft position sensor (Pickup coil). It has two wires coming from the crankcase: one is Gray, the other is usually Black/Blue - check the colors at both sides of the plug. If both wires are Gray, use the Dark Gray wire. The 2-pole connector is usually under the fuel tank.

The key is to ensure it can learn all six gears properly. Mine wouldn't learn past second gear initially due to changes in the firmware which required me to connect to the yellow/black wire as I had an early release model. I wrote the how-to with the updated version in mind so as to avoid confusion.

Need help with Gear Indicator

I'm having a problem with my Gipro-X indicator. I wired everything up just as the instructions said. I have an 05 that has a light gray and a dark gray brake wire from the narural colored plug to connect the green wire from the Gipro-X harness. I used the dark gray and tapped the red wire to the rear brake switch. I also have a speed-o-healer that I had tho connect three ways from the speedometer harness>Gipro-X>speed-o-healer, etc. I tried to start up the bike on the stand and the indicator keeps blinking "L". It doesn't blink fast or indicated me to change gears...please, anyone chime in.

I had the same thing when I used the dark grey wire. Try the light grey and I bet it will work. If you get the E message. Just turn the bike off and try again. Worked for me.

Installed it on my 07.. Got a problem.. It burns fuses everyother day.. PITA!!!!

I've hooked it up to the Brakelight.. I've tryid to change the fuse from a 7.5 to a 10.. still blows..

What to do? Find another source?

Thanks everyone. For those of you with problems, I'd recheck your wiring diagrams to ensure you're connected to the correct wires. It can be a bit confusing because of the different coloured wires used on different model years.

Thanks for the write up and photos mate. Made it a lot less daunting for someone such as myself that has never played with any kind of wiring.

If you are installing in a 2004 R1, I can definitely, through trial and error, confirm that the green wire from the giro pro x definitley needs to be spliced into the light grey/ off white NOT dark grey wire on the crankshaft position sensor. In the Australian model at least.

Also, if unsure which is the correct plug to look for, it is a plug that if you follow the wiring, runs to the RHS of the motor, just in front of and below the oil filler.

Learn from my noob mistakes!

Cheers

i just bought Healtech GIpro for my R1 07.

Did the seller ship the indicator with wrong wiring harness?

That looks identical to my speedohealer wire. There is only 2x 3-pole plugs, nothing else. (shouldnt there be wires for the crankshaft sensor & rearlight??)

It worked just fine for me. As to compatibility with Speedohealers and such, I think I recall reading something about that. Unfortunately, I don't recall.

Best I can say is to either contact your seller, or inquire directly with the manufacturer. :thumbup

Hi,

Yes, the speedohealer will work with the GPX, no issues there. I asked directly from healtech techsupport.

My main question here is, that do i have the right wire for the GPX. There is only 2x 3-pole connectors like the speedohealer wire has.

Shoudnt the GPX wireharness have few wires more to make the crankshaft sensor connection???(and the rearbrake??)

I bought this indicator from "private seller" and i'm affraid that he has accidentally shipped speedohealer wire with the indicator.

To Sum-up: The indicator is not working. It cant find the RPM signal

It's quite possible. I was thinking you bought it from a vendor
