How to lower my r1?

i have a 2001 r1 and i was thinking about lowering it. is this a good thing to do or not? and if so what would be the best way to do so. thanks for any info.

I had a link similar to this on my R6. It only had one setting on it.

I like the adjustable ones so that you can go back to stock height without removing any bolts.

I also had problems with the link using brass bushings instead of bearings. It start squeaking alot and was very hard to remove the bolts after having it installed over a period of time.

i just lowerd my 2001 r1 3 inches in the rear front i did 1 inch bike looks awsome i get alot of compliments on it the only bad thing is you cant really have passengers because the bike will scrape on bumps if your going to do anything i would say do like a 2 inch drop i will try to get some pics up for you guys

mine is lowered 1.5 front and 3 rear with bot-ons ext. pics below. mine scrapes even over speed bumps in a parking lot or hit a bump in the road too fast. it has grinded the bottom of the exhaust a little but im not too worried bout it. im 230 lbs too so you need to factor in ur weight too. it might be the right height till you sit on it.:thumbup

i lowered mine 3 in the rear and about 2.75 up front. to me its alot more comfortable to ride
if you cant find the stuff for your model try tobefast.com

i know ima catch hell for posting a pic of my bike up here but the hell with it

I am in the process of lowering my 2001. I have the diamond 1",3" link. I understand that it is rider preference as it relates to handling and that 1" will not effect handling "TOO" much.
This is what I am shooting for as I am 5'4". I have had the bike for a long time now, and am quite used to riding it, but just want that extra secure footing for the hills and the loose stuff. I have had "several" instances now that have made me more motivated to at least try the 1" drop.

the problem I am having is that I can't find which way the link is supposed to go on. One side has one hole; the other side has two. Which end should go towards the front/back?

Yeah if all you ride is straight with very little turns, then you won't notice too much. There is a reason that the bike is at the height it is now. Yamaha's R&D's put it there. After alot of testing. When you lower then it throws off there COG.

I lowered my '03 with the 1"-3" link and i hate it. It looks like shat!!!! It is way to close to the tire for my taste. If i knew it fit like this i would have bought the adjustable threaded one. I've been thinkin' about cutting of the end. :nforc:

Yeah, That is that way it looks on mine as well.

Road on saturday. It was nice to put my feet down. I was actually flat foot with my boots on. Liked that part ALOT!. However, it changed the characteristic a lot more than what I was hoping. Turn in felt more slow or sluggish (more work). It was fairly chilly so I wasn't really pushing myself hard; need to wait for a "nicer" day when the rubber can be more hot to make a true judgement call.
I have a feeling though that I am going to want to put it back.

The guys that I was with said that I looked real smooth through the turns, so at least I made it look good:thumbup

*waits patiently for another ride to get a better idea of whether its worth it or not*

not much if you like scraping pegs:rock but dont worry after bike week im bringing it back up to stock height. i did the mods for looks so went i go to bike week it wont be a stock looking bike. and im 6'5" 230 lbs so it kinda bottoms out if i hit a bump too fast and the bottom of the license plate is curved under from hitting the tire cuz it so low:D

Lowering not so bad for street...

Lowering the bike is not so bad for the street since it helps for acceleration if you're doing a quick drag, plus it looks nicer. Not so good for the track since lower floor clearance is limited and leaning to scrape knees is not going to happen LOL. Thos are some obvious points to consider before lowering your bike. Do you want looks and keeping the tire on the ground, or do you wanna have a good reaction of the bike when taking corners and lean the way they're designed to?

Ha ha, had forgotten about this thread...
My reason for lowering was to get better footing.

I have since removed the lowering link and put everything back to stock with the exception that I did not raise the front all the way back up. I left it maybe 1mm.

I DID like being flat footed on her, but her not turn the way I KNOW she can.
I removed said link before my track day(1st for me), and I am quite sure that it made for a better day.

Saw someone mention the squeeking. I too got the squeeking. Took about 2 weeks of decent riding before this started occuring. Another no no... NO squeeking on MY R1!

My next step in the "lowering" department is going to be muffin' with the seat. Need to find a used one to tear apart and try a seat mod I found.

Ok I am in a different situation. I bought a r1 that is really low to the ground with a vortex link (not sure what size) . My problem is I'm 6'2" (the lowering makes me look like I'm riding a 50), my feet drag every time i turn, and after reading all the disaster threads of snapped 1 piece links i know it has to go! :nforc:

I want the stock height. Dont know if i should just buy a stock link or get the adjustable (just cause i never hear stock links breaking)

Also what else i will need to buy with this to get it back to stock?

The stock link is probably the cheapest way to go. And as far as what else you would need to put it back to stock, I would check the manual (clymer, etc.) to see if they changed out any other parts. I know there are triangles that you can get for lowering, but not sure if you can do a triangle AND a lowering link at the same time.
Maybe new bolts?

I have an 09 R1, and I am about 5'5, so I bought an adjustable link to lower it, I only want to got 1.5 -2", just so i can sit flat footed, so i am sure I can put the link on and lower the rear, but how do I go about lowering the front, it sounds complicated, any help?

Had a question about the exhaust too, for a low mount, which is what I want to do, does anyone know if I can buy an r6 exhaust and just use that as opposed to buyin the graves low mount for $1600 which is bullshit for that exhaust, I can see spending that on the duals, but not on a low mount which is right there, I mean if you look at it, all you have to do is disconnect the o2 sensor, and put that into the exhaust and get a pipe angled enough to come out, I am not a cheap skate, I bought the akra full system for my 05 r1 but again it was dual, not a single low mount, any suggestions????

The Front is not complicated at all. Not sure what you would have to remove to get to the forks, but basically you need to undo the triple clamps and slide the fork tube up to the desired amount you want lowered. Someone with an '09 will have to chime in about what that actually measurement should be. I think it was 4 mm for me.
Just double check each side before putting everything back together. Probably would help to have an assistant; one to hold the fork while someone wrenches.

I can tell you that I did not like the way the suspension felt afte this, but it was nice to flat foot the bike. Cornering took more effort, but I was able to change my style to make it work. Ultimately I have decided that NOT having it lowered is better. Bike just feels better.
I deal with being on the balls of my feet.

I have no input on the exhaust.

Wish I could shoe-horn that '09 engine in to my '01 frame:rock

Hi... was wondering if all the above posts would be the same for a 2005 model.
I want to lower my R1 05 raven about 1.5 - 2", also to be flat footed.
I don't go on race track, use it more as a commuter, so it would definitely benefit me.

Do I also need to buy an adjustable link to do so?
