yesterday I was riding my Warrior down the high way cruising at a considerable pace for what I was on, just as I hit the turning lane a guy passed by me pretty fast on an R1...it was my old bike. Damn that bike looked nice going down the road.

How in the hell can you ride a sport bike(any bike) down the highway at a considerable speed with no helment? I know i could do it, but after looking at all the pics on the net, with brains splattered on the road, i think i'd wear mine. A human skull is kind of like an egg shell breaking when it hits concrete(asphalt) at a considerable speed.

Skeeter is right.

The other day some guys were at work talking around my bike. I went out to make sure they werent messing with it and found out some of them had bikes. Then I noticed this huge scar on this guys forhead and asked WTF happened (didnt even see half is head swollen like a baloon before!).

He said he got in a wreck after hitting sand without a helmet. He looked really messed up, and was lucky to be alive.

All my friends, including my brother wear at least a helmet and jacket. If they ever refused to, I would take their key from them and hide it.

there's no helmet law here. I always wear one, even when I rode my Harley I wore one.

As for seeing some one go down, or actually crashing, I've got some friends who have done plenty of both and they still won't ever wear one.

I always wear full leathers, back protector, helmet, gloves and boots when I ride, even in the height of summer. I have seen a chap over here, pull up at the side of me at traffic lights wearing trainers (not fastened) shorts and a lid, thats it.... I was in full race leathers and sweating my ..... off. he said to me, bet you are hot, yeah I replied, but I am protected if I have an off, you are not...

His reply.... Im a good rider!

Well, good rider or not you can have accidents, 12 weeks ago, I got rear ended coming home from work, the car didnt see me and just went right through me and the bike, my kit did save me, though my foot was crushed.

So my point is, you can be the best rider in the world, but it does not stop some idiot from knocking you off, and when that happens, we need all the protection we need.

i dont believe in helmet/seatbelt laws (xcept for kids, they dont know anybetter)... once you are no longer a minor i could care less if you kill yourself, one less idiot around to hurt me :fact

i have ridden on a few select occasions without helmet i.e. cruising southbeach/returning home from south beach (to brickell ave.) or if i am lucky enuff to meet a lady that wants a ride, i always give my helmet to the passenger if i dont bring 2.

the odd part is while i will take my helmet off in these limited (and lower speed situations) I will never ride without gloves... i cant even move my bike across a parking lot without gloves on the grips dont feel right...

i have also been hit in my kevlar knuckles by road debris (rock/stick :dunno) I was doin about 80mph and it hurt like hell cant imagine if i didnt wear the gloves

i dunno, sometimes i wish i had a choice?

central london can be a git when its hot and gridlocked, even on the bike. wouldn't mind having the option of sticking it on the back of the ride whilst i crawl through (i've had to do that with gear before when i thought i was going to pass out!)

and if im' honest, i'd love to know what it felt like:cool:

motorway would be blummin uncomfortable tho - dont get that option at all.

shit I was at fudrockers in miami yesterday and half of the squids had no helmets and the other half had one (strapped to the back seat!)

My squid tall-tale signs...
1)no gear (helmet strapped to the back and shades on is number 1).
2)starts the bike and revs the shit out of it at the same time.(without knowing it's bad for the engine without letting it warm up first.)
3) revs at every stop light.
4) any activity which includes one of the wheels leaving the ground in public roads.
5) Shows a great desire to impress everyone on the road including other riders by doing things mentioned on #4.
6) Does not listen to advice from veteran riders and starts every sentence with... "I raced BLANK", "I beat BLANK" or "my bike is faster than BLANK".
7) States that the reason he/she rides is to get girls/boys or because his bike looks nice.

Anyone that does the things aforementioned I concider a danger to themselves, therefore being a greater danger to me.
quite honestly I only have 2 friends that I ride with (one got hit by a cab and the other's motor blew).
Now I ride on my own and actually find myself quite bothered with the new bike scene that has emerged.

I can't really go out to bike hangouts anymore as I feel that the bonding factor of brothers you ride with, just for the love of riding, has disapeared.

It is sad because I can truly say that our sport is literaly being destroyed straight from within.

As far as the helmet law goes, I don't care, let them not wear their helmets, Darwin's job is made more difficult with the law.

Sorry for the rant, I saw a guy on a cbr with what seemed to have been a 5-10 year old little kid on the back and it made me sick to my stomach, that should be a crime.

There isnt a helmet law in Kentucky either. Alot of times me and a couple friends will head down to the place where they drag off of 13th St and there are some guys down there that never where helmets. These guys are dragging in flip flops, t-shirts, and no helmets, WTF.... I got hit by a june bug in the neck one time and it hurt like hell, imagine taking a rock to the face at 75mph. As long as I'm on 2 wheels the lid is on!!:thumbup

Oh man, junebugs are brutal!!! I know a guy here that rode a BMW cruiser - one day on a ride (with no helmet, or at least no visor), a junebug hit him in the freaking EYE :scared.

He literally almost lost his eye that day. Not good.

My dad only wears a helmet when he rides w/me, once saw him get hit in the face by a bird at about 75mph. Been down twice and have had head injury from previous car accident (was a passenger) both times I would be dead w/o helmet. Time I went down w/fullgear was worse, (roughly same speed) seen A LOT of bike accidents every one is diff you never know is the thing.

SPEED its not as bad as youthink, most of the regulars in the Miami Squad thread still have the brother hood.... but a lot of them are without bikes for various reasons, or wifed up....

the ones that do still ride will put it up on one anytime they think the cops aint watching (xcept for me and beafer cause we suck :lol).... i wouldnt call them squids though.....

well I'd say people with common sense amounts to about 20% of US population. but I totally agree with you.

Gabeowen--- You must not care about the ole noggin of yours to crack it once and still not wear a helmet. Not to bash you or anything but, you fall into that 80% bracket:chair:

This has been talked about 1000x here and it is always the same.. same people supporting the helmet laws and the same people who hate it.. including myself.

I don't feel like the .gov telling me what to do. So, if I want a helmet I ride in NC and when I don't feel like wearing a helmet. I go to South Carolina (bike week or such). I enjoy it. Maybe it isn't as bad as flordia (sounds real bad).

I've been in 2 street accidents, one with a helmet and one without. Both lost alot of skin, but when I didn't have my helmet my head the ground hard, but thankfully only suffered a cracked skull. Will I still wear a helmet? Yes, will I still occassionally ride without a helmet? Yes.

Do I own gear? Yes. Which I only wear when I plan on going faster than the posted speed limits. . . . .

I think I look stupid riding with a T-shirt flapping all over the damn place. By the time you get where your going to t-shirt would fit Fat Freddy cause its so stretched out. If I went to the beach on vacation, I MIGHT, might cruise the strip w/o a helmet or gear. But not flip flops, thats just stupid, and retarded looking.

I want to invoke a law.

When you see a rider w/o a helmet on, proceed calmly up to him and knock the shit out of him in his forehead. Then politely tell him thats not half as bad as it will feel when you bounce it off the ground.

The few times I've taken my bike down to Miami.. I've ridden with no helmet, gloves, etc.. I must admit anythiing below 50mph its a ball.. between 50-100mph its too much shyt hitting you the rocks and the wind... anything over a 100 just isnt fun without gear..

While I wont knock those who do it.. and do think its fine given the right time and place (running errands around the block).. I agree anything highway speeds or more.. wear you helmet, jacket & gloves

I've ridden without a helmet on a few occasions in Chicago. Mostly in the crowded low speed areas..just cruising with a girl on the back or whatever. Odd thing is...without a helmet I ride slow and "safe." When the helmet and the gear is on...it's like all bets are off and I want to go into "pro-racer" mode. So in that sense I'm not sure if I'm safer with my gear on than without.

When I first started riding the guys I rode with never wore a helmet so neither did I. I remember blasting down the highway at about 160-170mph on my '99 R1. Feeling the wind blast against your face stings and the sound is DEAFENING. After experiencing that a few times and finding a better group of guys to ride with you'd have a hard time finding me riding without gear.

I don't think it should be a law though...I believe people have the right to do stupid things even if it kills them.

I dont think anyone should be forced to wear a helmet unless they're under age.
If those people who choose not to be safe wanna risk their lives then let them, its their life and should be their decision.

I dont agree with seatbelt laws either, only children should have to wear them, anyone else should be able to make that decision themsleves.

umm yea, and I dont agree with the gov taking $500 out of my $2000 check.

It easy to find people not wearing the proper gear down here in Miami, on the other hand it's nearly impossible to find riders with at least a jacket and helmet. Everyone asks me how am I going to ride with a jacket in 90 degree heat, I just say I would rather sweat then have to scrape gravel and get skin graphs...they don't say mush after that.
