What to buy......

09 - R1 or.......

Ducati 1198S......... or even the 1098R.....

Has anyone been on the 09 yet..?
How is the power.... what the actual HP?

I have an R6....so the R1 would be great.... and so will a Ducati!!:rock

Here in MI.... dealers aren't expecting them to hit the showroom till late March Early April..... So I am hoping the West Coast crew would have some insight on the R1.....

Thanks....

Welcome to the board! Asking people about what you should buy on the R1-Forum is like asking the "Used Car Salesman" on his lot where is the best place to buy a car.

The one is the only one you need.

Interesting dilemma .... imho I would go 1198s :yesnod I am a Yamaha fan, but I have been really sweating that new 1198s. I am not in the market for another bike, but I have even casually mentioned it to the wife a few times, to see what her reaction was.

K...personally, if you don't mind dropping the coin on the S or R versions of those Ducs...I wouldn't even look at the R1. Or maybe I would...

MSRP

R1 - 12,600
1198S - 21,800
1098R - 40,000

Buy the S and the R1...toss the R out of your mind. Two bikes, for less than the cost of the one you are willing to buy.

Unless you just like wasting money.. the R is a joke right now. Cant believe Ducati is still asking $40k.. when they sell a $20k bike that does 95% of what their top model does.

If anything like Sabian said.. get the S first.. and then go for the R1 later this year. I honestly think theres a such thing as having too many bikes, because it takes away from enjoying what a specific model has too offer.

I've owned as many as 4 bikes at one time.. and it was nothing but a waste of money.

the tribe has spoken .... well at least the 2 important ones have :lol

With the specs on the 1198s ... the R should be taken out of the equation, especially considering the price.

Hard to make a recommendation without knowing your riding experience and what you're planning on using the bike for.

The 09 R1 has GOT to be an amazing ride, no doubt. I'd love to test one out.

If you've got the Ducati fever, get one. For street riding and the occasional track day, even a bare bones 1098 is more than enough bike, trust me. The 1098S rocks, I've ridden one several times. Never ridden an 1198 but I'm sure they're even better bikes with more bhp and torque. The 1098R is freaky powerful. I've only got 500 post break-in miles on mine and I'm still learning how to handle the power. Full throttle needs to be seriously thought out beforehand.

All in all, you can't go wrong with any literbike these days, they're all that good.

Pics when you take delivery, and good luck!

1198 all the way!

If you're seriously in the market for a 1098R, then you can afford to buy BOTH!

Give us all progress reports as you break them both in!

hahha like they said

if you have 40k to spend buy a new r1 and a 1198s

or get a new r1 and a new car.......

well to each his own i guess

like they said it depends on your riding experience.....everyone of those bikes would be a huge jump from the r6......

i hate these threads but just my.02

of course you realize there is a quota for Ducati's in DSB . . . did you ask Knedrag for permission, you should really consider an R1, we need to help offset the balance of all the GSXR nerds :hammer: :lol

by chance have you talked to Scott, you might want to get his opinion since your already a customer of his too, he's a good reference source :secret:

I did talk to Scott.....he stayed pretty neutral.... saying that are both good....
When I got the R6 last year....I was looking at the R1.....Talked into the R6 by wife and Salesman.... "cause in believe that R6 was in Stock and the R1 wasn't.... Ride experience..... riding since 7.....dirt and track... Professional Downhill Mountain Bike at 20.... Married at 26...... all toys gone...:rant

Now kids are older ... life is good....time to buy some toys!!!....

i would get the r1. but i think the ducatis look like sh!t. never liked any of them. and one ducati is the same as the rest. put the extra $$$ into the r1 and it'll be your own, unlike any other. and that's cool.

Id say get a 08 R1 still on the floor.

You can find them for real cheap then drop some cash into forks, wheels, engine work, exhaust & other performance parts, HID's, sprockets, rear sets, and everything else. The bike will be more powerful and agile then anything with possible use on the streets and depending on your skill, the track.

But thats just me.....
I like the feel of getting a bike and building my own baby out of it.

the 1098R should retain most of its value. So in theory, you could change your mind later on down the road, and recover most of what you put into the 1098R. Depends on the market and the country.

The 1200cc Ducati twins make obscene torque, but with their low redlines, they're kind of like big powerful diesels - hitting the rev limiter just when every other engine is waking up.

But oh lordy does the 09 R1 sounds beautiful.

To choose? When you watched the 2008 Laguna Seca MotoGP, who were you rooting for? The answer to that should answer what bike you should get :)

I love my rice, but I will never part with my pasta...

i would consider 1198 if you are up for the change of little more in maintenance.
otherwise go with the 09 R1 + mods. but if you never rode a Vtwin i would suggest getting
the 1198 stock. then work your way up with the right mods.
i've been a Duc fan myself even tho ive been riding yamaha for years. soon i will have
both in my garage....:rock. iA
but if you have the money to buy the 1198... why not invest it on 1098S o 1098R
they are completely setup for track use... GL with the decision. :thumbup
