Is 200 mph possible? Sprockets/Gearing?

My dad is wanting to run his 04 R1 at the Texas Mile this year. Hes hoping to hit 200mph on the bike. The issue we're running in to isn't so much the horsepower but the gearing.

In order for the R1 to do 200mph it would require a 17/40 or 18/41 (I think the 18/41 combo would be best considering the power band on the bike..)

However, I'm not finding any sprockets of the right size. The closest I've been able to find is 17/42 - Unfortunately this is only good enough for 192mph @ redline

So what are our options here? Custom sprocket set for the bike?

Motomummy has Renthals in 40, probably others too. Get a few different size rears to take there.

I'd like to try the Ohio mile this year, I'm curious what my '12 R1 will do with just a flash and boltons and not even lowered. I don't have dillusions of 200 though, I'd be happy getting close to 185. I think its obtainable, won't know for sure until its tried. And that makes me want to try it even more.

Renthal doesn't make them for the Yamaha down that low, they do for the Honda and other bikes, but not Yamaha. YOu're gonna need power though and lots of it. It shouldn't take nearly as drastic of gearing as you're posting to hit 200mph though, if you have the power for it.

Whats the smallest Renthal rear Corey?

I've been to the Texas mile and I am in the progress of getting my bike ready seems like most bikes that hit 200 are also pushing around 185-200+ hp.

What are the lightly modded 1000's running, that you saw there ? 180's ?

Remember that even on the bitumen, at high speed you will see wheel slip of between 3-5%... so even if gearing commander tells you 200mph may be possible, the speed trap will likely show less than this due to wheel slip.

Additionally, you'll find that you maximum speed will be reached at your max HP, so if max HP is at 12,500rpm, you need to make sure your gearing is set for 200mph (plus slip) at that point, not at redline.

Thats precisely why I'm looking for specific gear sizes. I feel like we'd want to be at 200mph 200-300rpm before peak HP. Depending on the amount of tire slip and such we may want it to be 400-500 before peak.

Once we have the bike dyno'd we'll have a better idea of what we need to do this.

Personally, I told him to just go buy a busa and do this but hes determined to do it on the R1

183 I think been a year on my 2008 r1. That was with pcV slip ons and gears and race fuel.

How much do you weigh, was bike lowered, what gearing ? I'd really like to go to Ohio this year, and looking for as much info as possible, especially gearing. The Ohio track looks alot smoother and safer than Texas, and is alot closer to me in Pa. When is the Texas event this year ?

2012 R1 has a full Graves Ti system and thier lower velocity stacks, BMC race air, euro airbox mod, flashed ecu. 16/43 gearing w/a 520ERV3 chain and Renthal f&r sprockets,Galfer rear rotor, quite a few Tibolts. Ballistic 12 cell battery. I'm about 145,bikes lost around 20lbs. On my '06 I have a tether kill sw. and also bought an aluminum Puig chainguard that I extended some to try there last year, but never did. I would need to add a tether kill and modify the '06's chainguard for the '12 to run it,and wire some bolts for the safety inspection. There is 4 events in Ohio this year, in April June July and Sept. Go to ECTA for the dates and schedule.

No head work, fuelmaps and changes can be flashed to the ecu. Has a Dynojet Graves map in the ecu now. My '06 has Bazzaz ZFI & ZAFM, and I might be getting that setup on the '12. Since it is only a mile, light weight should help a good bit. I was trapping at 145+ regularly on the '06 all stock in the 1/4 (running 9.80-9.90),where heavier riders only went 135 if that. Getting the bike up to speed as fast as possible is the name of the game in LSR, and I think I could have an advantage in that regard, what do you think ?

Gearing shouldn't make that much if a difference. It can only limit your top speed, not increase it. It's all based off power, frontal surface area, and coefficient of drag. Those gearing calculators are just going by ratios.

What all do you have done to your bike now? When is event in Ohio?

Last year I think they had four weekends I live in the town that's its hosted in Wilmington Ohio its on the old DHL runway. Just try a search on Google

Thats cool, if I do end up going this year I'll let you know. :thumbup

I believe 200+ mph is quite possible on the R1 with the change of the gear ratio of the sprockets, if I can do 189 mph than 200 is quite possible indeed, but the correct speed is not going to register on the speedometer with out a speedo healer and some decent tires, gotta remember that some tires are rated for no more than 170 with a little extra for safety, so correct tires, correct combo sprockets, speedo healer, and a long @ss straight stretch of highway. (not when vehicles are present), and bam your 200 mph.

He's trying to do it in a mile(not possible with just gears). I don't belive speedos on r1s will read over 189mph. Think there's a thread on here about it. I also have a hard time beliveing a stock r1 with gears can hit it. Not saying it can't happen.

You're right, he's not going to do it in just a mile, need many more miles but it can be done. The ECU limiter does limit the bike to just 189mph and will not go pass but we all know that. The gearing that he wants will just starts off slow and just steady increase, not very practical for street use but if he just wants to break the 200mph and thats it, it can be done.

there is not one stock R1 that has ever been made that can come close to 190mph falling off a damn cliff will with just bolt ons. You could go for 10 miles, it will never happen with out engine work.

#29 ·
They do 184 (roughly) stock, does'nt seem impossible IMO.

#28 ·
i might have to get on the ball and see what my bike will do in ohio. quick kurt what are you hoping to hit this year if you go?
Never tried it before, but HOPING Low/mid 180's :dunno

Just because some people bikes can't do 190mph or even come close to it doesnt mean it cant be done, a clean engine with synthetic oil,Carbon fiber Scorpion muffler, K&N filter, P pilot tires, stainless steel oil filter, cleaned and lubed 520 chain, and Speedo healer can reach 189mph on Highway 95 in Florida with mininal wind gust (yes, I did it), why cant 200mph be done with no Power Commander and the correct gear combo. Am I the only one on this post that pushes their bike to the limit on here.

Man I hate to bust your bubble but I have a 03 and a 06 and if you look at my mods you will see nothing I have is stock. Both of my bikes have head work cams and so on. My 03 has a 65 shot of nitrous and my 06 has more than that. This is not my first rodeo! The top speed of a 03 R1 from the factory is 167. You better wake up and get out of that speed dream if you think you were close to 189 on a 03 or any R1 with a stock engine.

Are the bikes actually limited to 189 or just the speedo wont go past 189? I've been on 189 with rpm left for a couple seconds and could never get above the 189 indicated. Of course this was on a race track ;)
