Lost Rear Brake Pressure while slowing to a stop light.

I did try the search feature so I hope this isn't a repeat. I found lots of --soon to be-- useful information.

So I was slowing to a stop light when all of the sudden I lost pressure in the rear brake. Scared the hell outta me cause i thought I had gotten brake fluid all over and was sure I was gonna slip but after coming to a stop, looking over and inspecting a little I saw no fluid. I pulled off the road to take a better look and still I could find no fluid anywhere - no evidence of any seal being broke that I could see.

I took the cap off the reservoir. The blatter was fulling extended and the fluid was low, but still within the Min/Max lines... closer to the Minimum Line. Put the cap back on and gave it a few pumps with my hand and I could see the fluid level rising in the reservoir when I press the pedal down.

Pads look good, no leaking around the caliper pistons... When riding, if I press the rear brake, it works for just a moment and then nothing, won't hold any pressure.

Did I break a seal inside the master cylinder? Did I get air in the system somehow? I've seen plenty of threads on here about people having trouble with their brake system not holding pressure but it's always when their working on it and did something wrong... I wasn't working on mine, just cruising down the road and it did this on it's own.

What puzzles me is that there is fluid missing and no signs of a leak, how could that be... :dunno

haha -- just use the fronts -- no ty LOL. I use both front and rear in almost every braking situation I find myself in and I'm really missing my rear brakes.

I really think you're on to it Buttercup...

Last night I bled 2 reservoirs worth of fluid through the system with a hose attached to the bleeder so I could get a good look at how much air was in there... I found no air whatsoever.

If I pump it, then hold it down and open the bleeder I get nothing. If I open the bleeder as I'm pushing the pedal down it will push the fluid out but like I said, if I hold it down and then open I get nothing. Really seems to me like the seal on the plunger is bad and the fluid is just moving from one side of the plunger to the other -- building no pressure at all.

This would also shine a little light on how it went out (while driving vs working on the brake system) and showing no signs of leaking anywhere.

So I guess my question is: Do I order the $60 rebuild kit, order a $170 new master cylinder or get a used one for the price of the rebuild kit... I'm leaning towards the rebuild kit as Buttercup suggested.

Posting a "how to" that could be cool, good idea. I'm quite crafty, both my brothers are mechanics/transmission specialists - I just chose to go the computer route but I built the 350 in my camaro and installed it along with the transmission by myself among all the other mechanical work my dad made me do as a child lol. So I'm confident I can handle the job, just wanted to check with the forum to see if that was the correct route as I've never actually worked on bikes before.

Thx for the help guys/gals. I'll get the rebuild kit ordered and let you know how it goes... and hopefully get a nice little "how to" posted up.
