More modding - My OEM race tail

So I have always wanted a race tail, as the R1 shouldn't be any other way, but have never found one I really liked. They either don't fit that well or the tail light being cut in always looks a bit ill fitting. The biggest thing though, is that they don't seem to come with a full under tail if in fact they have one.

So here's my solution, it an OEM tail with a Targa cowl bonded to it. Gives a perfect factory fit and race look, my perfect solution.

Now the other thing I have always looked at, is that the lines of the paintwork didn't flow. The black of the belly pan flows up towards the tail section and so, I dealt with that at the same time.

So here she is, now a true 06 Anniversary Tri-Color and I love it, came out exactly as my mind imagined it.

Thanks man.

Nicley done! And your swingarm?
Thanks they are both done by the same guy :thumbup

Awesome Ian. It's exactly what the bike needed to make it a bit more unique. It also compliments how seriously racey the front end now is. There's something about nickel Brembo's and a solo seat cowl that just done jive. I've never liked the silly rubber block on the oem cowls anyway.

I think it's perfectly balanced color wise. The plane on which the black falls into place is deadly even. Love it.

My only suggestion would be to get something going on the flat section behind the seat. A cleanly cut foam pad, a signature sticker, or even the tuning forks logo in white would add some great contrast. Nice work.

So who wants to start taking bets? I say she's all black by 2012.
Thanks Seth, I'm looking into something for the flat section :thumbup

And that's all the black you get now :fact :lol

Ian I really like it bit I agree with B'eater. It needs a stripe of yellow. Personally I likes the scheme before. I say paint it the same way.
Appreciate the comments and I can see where you are coming from but, like I say, I've lived with it a bit now and imagined it for over a year.
There's no way it will go back to yellow back there :fact

:lol :2bitchsla There's still more yellow bodywork.

It's been done with a whole combination of bonding agents depending what was being put together. There is some metal bonded in there to fill the old lock hole and fenders mounting holes and that was bonded with a different compound than what was used to join the tail to the Targa cowl. The finishing was done with glass and bondo.

Is very cool in design but beaters right, needs something yellow or it's just not finished. You said that. I know Targa probably gave you a stick on pad but as its still a street bike consider a pad made from your OEM seat. Easily done with no cost and custom designed by you. Just talking about this on the 6 forum. This was Targa and OEM.

I think it looks fantastic Ian, very racy and unique. :bow
I'm obviously going to disagree with everyone else, I like it black, it makes the colours of the front half pop out even more. I can see the line that runs from the bottom tip of the lowers, and up along the underside of the tank/seat. Everyone else must be blind...EVERYONE!:crash
Are you going to drill holes and put the tail tidy back in the OEM spot, or do something US ?
I've been thinking about putting a race subframe on mine, and bonding the solo cowl to the seat unit too!

i see the darkside is starting to take over.

the tail doesn't need shit but a couple clean white decals. something OEM.

Because the lines of color on the bike don't flow to the tail :no

Small white number plates on each side would look good IMO. :thumbup
This is the only sort of thing I might consider, goes with the race image of the tail and doesn't upset the color lines :fact
I will not be doing anything for a while though, I lived with the yellow for a number of years before changing that, so I'll live with the black for a while.
