Here's an email I just sent SATO:

Dear Sato,

I would like to order some replacement parts for my new rearsets I just got in yesterday. It is for a YZF-R1 ’04 (L). On the Shifter side… I will need part # 14, 4, 13 & 15.

I was wondering if it is common for the button head, #4 to bend? I am configured gp style and it seems to have bent ALOT and wondering what I could do to prevent this from happening? Also… the reason for these ordered parts… is because Plain Nut #15 came off as I was riding (gp style). Is there any way to prevent it from coming off again? I used loctite and it still came off, therefore loosening Male Rod End #14. It was my first day riding with them on, and I already have problems. I love the product… it’s just that I haven’t had any time to enjoy it, since I already have to order new replacement parts within less a day of riding.

Please let me know more details

------------------------

Basically I installed them on last night and rode around the neighborhood checking if everything was properly on. Retightened some bolts and seems like good to go for work next morning.

I wake up and ride to work… a few miles later… I notice I cannot shift any longer. The shifter is not in its place and I can no longer shift. Turns out, one of the nuts came off connecting the shifter to the rod that engages the gears. Crap. I pull over.

I put loctite on and everything… and it still came off. I’m bummed, cause It has been less than a day…and now I have to order some new replacement parts. Life’s not fair.

I’ll post up pictures when I get the parts and install them. It should be a week, since Sato is out until December 4th. :(

I thought this sort of thing only happened to me. That really sucks. Especially since those are such a nice looking pair of rear sets. Good luck with the repair job, I hope they have an answer for you as far as preventing that from happening again goes.

let me know how they feel and shift in standard and reverse, my wife just got my black ones in the mail today from dan kyle, how long to install also, thanks

I’ve only shifted in reverse… and it takes some getting used to. With the problem I have now… I’m seriously contemplating on going back to standard shifting. I’m not sure yet. While on reverse mode, I had to always remind myself that its 5 down and 1 up.

The quality of these rearsets is overkill… which I like. Everything feels and looks good. It is strong as can’t be bent, maybe except for some screws than have bent… (like on mine already!) It took me awhile to install… at least 2 hours… since I like to be thorough and I’m not a natural mechanically inclined kinda guy. So I like to take my time. Also, putting on loctite on everything and testing out what position feels best takes up a lot of the time as well. Plus, the instructions are crappy and you kinda just have to figure it out and guestimate where everything goes by looking at the pictures.

It’s a pain the as$... but all worth it if they’re on properly and ready to go. Good luck and post up some pics will ya… as you install yours.

yup yup... got it from sprocket center... I believe for both chain and rear sprocket.. $185.00. You tell them your gearing and they cut the chain for you.

No sprocket cover... no issues at all. I just make sure my laces aren't dangling out. Even so, it is 8 inches away from my feet. Just make sure you maintain your chain. I clean mine with wd40 every week. It looks brand new!

Alrighty... I guess I'll post up the pics of my rear sets... even though the shifter side is not to par:

Here, I'm missing a ball bearing rod end, which connects the shift link to the shift pedal.

You see the shift pedal dangle?? It is because nothing is holding it into place.
Image

Look how this screw bent! Not good.
Image

This is NOT what the left rear set is suppose to look like.
Image

The right side turned out good.

Another angle.

With the help of photoshop... here's what the final product is suppose to look like on my bike:

Don't get me wrong... I love these rearsets. I wouldn't get any other. If you're thinking about getting Sato's... definantly do your research among other brands... and you decide. They are top-notch quality material and very pimp. In a week, when I get my replacement parts... I'll be ready to go.
