My story, looped it @ 80 mph...(pics added)
Edit: pics added starting on page 2.
Well it happened 2.5 weeks ago and I haven't had the nerve to share cuz frankly I'm pretty ****in ashamed. So here's the low down (in hopes that someone won't have to learn the lessons I've learned).
My Riding Experience.............
Had 2 different Ex500s about 6-7 years ago for a couple years. Got the R1 in June 2002, consider myself to be about a C+ to B- in the twisties and on the track. Been to the track once. I really enjoy the twisties and definitely not much of a stunter. Never really saw myself becoming a stunter but I recently started trying to get the front off the ground. Never officially got to balance point but was able to get the front up in a standup.
My Story............
For financial reasons I've been considering selling my Blue '02. So I decided to take one of my last few rides out by myself. A nice straight 4 lane undivided highway with no traffic especially on a Sunday afternoon. Been practicing standups for a couple months but for some reason decided to try a sit down which I hadn't done in a long time. Goosed it too much in 2nd at about 70 mph came up much more quickly than I expected since I hadn't done a sit down in a while. Couldn't recover. The backward motion only made me pull on the throttle more and over I went. ****ing nightmare I can't get out of my head. I can honestly say that not once was I fearful for my own safety just my beautiful steed I've invested so much time and money into. Like my brand new Hindle full race system. Well all I can say is thank got for leather and helmets. They did a fantastic job protecting me although they are history. Only casualty was some minor road rash on the tops of my hands since the leather in the gloves is softer and thinner and didn't like an 80 mph belt sander attacking them. Damn!!! All I can say is at that speed you don't think you're ever going to stop sliding or rolling. I can't imagine at 150 mph. It was weird. At one point I thought I had stopped sliding, put my hands down to get up but had another 20 feet to go!!! Truly amazing. When I finally stopped I jumped to my feet and had to run another 50 meters down the road to pick my bike up......and yes I did RUN!!! Was able to roll it off on the shoulder. Some folks in cars a long way ahead and behind me witnessed the occasion and pulled over to make sure I was ok. I was, called my friend with a pickup to come pick me up. Apparently one of them called the paramedics cuz they showed up a few minutes later along with fire and sheriff. They wrapped my hands up and the sheriff told me a ticket for reckless driving wasn't something I really needed right now. I agreed. Friend came and went home.
Lessons learned...........
1.) Fuel injection is very twitchy (I guess I already knew that...)
2.) Listening to music can impair your judgement. I was listening to music for the 1st time on a bike when it happened. Thanks a lot Mudvayne.
3.) Doesn't make a lot of sense to stunt on your pride a joy even though the beast is FULLY capable of it. Get a damn cheap stunt bike for that s.h.i.t.
4.) Full coverage insurance is PROBABLY a good idea. I say probably because in this case the cost to repair the damage is going to be less than my annual premium but it COULD have been much more.
5.) Frame sliders are worth their weight in gold!
6.) Don't pull stupid s.h.i.t like this while alone. I was lucky there were witnesses and I was capable of pulling my cellphone out of the trunk and calling my buddy with a pickup truck.
The Bike's Condition.....................
Under the circumstances it is amazing how good condition the bike is in. I'll post some pictures later. I looks like it just went back on it rear end and then just laid down for a nice long slide........unfortunately on the right side chewing up my 2 week old Hindle pipe. What's weird is it did slam down on the rear tire basically shattering the rim. Picture of that is amazing. Almost all the plastic will need replacing. But not a scratch on the tank, frame, subframe, clip ons, and forks thanks to sliders and luck. However, it must have slammed down on the side cuz the clutch protector snapped off and ground down the clutch cover. So here's my list of items needed. Perhaps my contributions to the forum (like initiating the Goodwill section and several how-to's) will pay off in good deals from other members.
-upper fairing and stay
-head light
-mirrors
-both mid fairings
-right side lower
-tail section plastic (internal battery/electronics tray/trunk is repairable)
-rear wheel, may take this opportunity to upgrade to OZ or PVM wheels depending on the success of everything else.
-tail light, prefer to go straight to an integrator (had Hightechspeed.com's) rather than paying for stock tail light and then modifying with integrator.
-windscreen is ok but scratched a little, probably upgrade to a ZG DB
-clutch cover
-rear brake lever
-Hindle Race high exit (not the ultra high mount) with the 2 1/4 slip on, and the hanger. The header survived. The can and elbow are actually still functional but just look like crap. Possibly a good trade option for a race bike and pay the difference.
-LP flush mounts for the tail section, I'll probably upgrade to Greggs LEDs for the front.
-Left side stator cover (minor scratches from a previous unrelated minor mishap, a good trade/pay the difference opportunity)
I may be forgetting something since I'm a thousand miles away on vacation at the moment.
Better luck/judgement to you all.
Regards,
JG
