Hello. I purchased a 2014 a week ago and have been curious about its loud chattery engine. Coming from a 2008 Honda CBR1K, its alot louder and has more noises so I wanted to know if my engine was a-ok. Sounds kinda whiney maybe?? Something else to note is the clutch is shutters quite a bit if I try to go from the friction zone. I don't know if that is normal either. Let me knows what yall think!

Thanks

yeah man coming from a honda you're going to be hearing LOT of engine stuff on a Yamaha lol. even when my 15 was brand new it was clanky and noisy. I even thought it might be missing an exhaust gasket on the head. lol.
I think it has a lot to do with how they grind the lobes on the camshafts. there seems to be a spot the lobe doesn't touch the lifters and then it touches on the tip of the lob but also along the bottom there is always shiny spots. I guarantee these bikes open the valves when the lobe is facing up. that's why they have such huge valve clearances on a yamaha. which in turn makes a lot of noise. when I worked at the dealership that sold suzuki and kawasaki their engines had much tighter specs. and on some of the kawasaki mules I played with the spec a little. if it wasn't tight it clacked like big time. I couldn't leave them at the high end of the spec so when they tighten up with use they're more in the middle. they had to be tight or it made a noise that everyone noticed.

All normal! There is a fix for the clutch. You can get the Graves Clutch kit or as some have done buy 07-08 R1 OEM parts to fix. The OEM way is cheaper.

Here's a good video for the Clutch (with part numbers):
