Ohlins steering damper..need help

im thinking of getting a used ohlins steering damper. i was just wondering what to look for as far if its still good. or how would i know if its damaged. also if the damper is installed on the bike, does it have any play on it. i mean can u move it around with no problem or should it be just stable once its intalled. the one i looked at today has play on the middle part of the damper. where the damper bolts on to the 36 mm nut. is this natural.

the joint right in the middle of the damper itself has play when its mounted on the bike. its moves up and down and half cicular motion. is that suppose to not move at all. the joint at the end of the damper has a small play in it but i think thats normal. anyways, just wondering if the damper is still good. and how much does it cost for a rebuild.

oh ya i noticed in the middle joint that half of the black washer has been torn off. thanks

I had reall bad expiriance with that. I also bought a used one and a month after I found myself instaling a new one from the box. It has a lot of vibes and noises that freaked me out.

Any way, If you decide to buy it make sure the guy that had it before didn't crashed The bike with it.

The play is OK, unless it's a play between the round thing and the ring.

My .02 - Dont get a used one.

There should be very little play in the middle area. It's probably because the teflon washer is almost gone, as you have stated. You should buy another one, they go for around $3-5.

is it hard to install the teflon washer. where can i get info on how to install a new teflon washer. do you know how to do it. thanks

I need the triangular plate for an Ohlins Damper for an '02 R1. If the guy cant sell his used setup, I'll take the plate off his hands.

Maybe you have a different mounting setup for yours. My Ohlins is for a 2001 R1. The Teflon washer/spacer sits between the triangular mounting piece and the actual steering damper. You just place it there, there's nothing to it. Go to the Ohlins website, they have detailed diagrams for the installation.

By the way, is that a 2002 R1? It looks exactly like mine, (same color) except the previous owner really scratched up the ignition switch area.
