"WASHINGTON - Pat Tillman, who gave up a lucrative NFL contract with the Arizona Cardinals to join the Army Rangers, was killed in action in Afghanistan, military officials said Friday.

In the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Tillman decided to turn down a three-year, $3.6 million contract with the Cardinals to enlist in the Army.

Tillman was first deployed to Iraq in March 2003 with the 75th Rangers.
In Afghanistan, Tillman's battalion was involved in "Operation Mountain Storm," part of the U.S. campaign against Taliban and al-Qaida groups along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, military officials told NBC.

He was killed during action in the past 24 hours, they said.

Separately, officials who spoke with The Associated Press said a formal announcement was expected later in the day. Spokesmen at the Pentagon and U.S. Army declined comment.

Tillman joined the Army with his younger brother Kevin in May 2002, but Pat Tillman denied requests for media coverage of his enlistment, basic training and ultimate deployments."

I just read this and thought I'd share this with you guys. I have nothing but love and respect for him. Gave up a career in the NFL to serve this country. How many men do you think would trade over a million dollars a year and fame for $18,000 or so a year? That's a true American right there. RIP

MY best friend is an Army Ranger.. knew Tillman (I remember from prior talks)..
I just read that article as well... I agree that he sacrificed alot but in that article you will notice he was not a materialistic man.. I have serious respect for him and his wife for backing his decisions to join the military.

I wish those who have passed on along the same manner as him would get just as much attention.. maybe they didn't pass up a couple million.. but they and their families have still sacrificed the greatest amount.

RIP all those who will not and have not come home...

Tillman is by far the best and brightest pro athlete we have in the world today. While most sit back and reap in the dollars, Tillman defended them. This guy gave up the American dream to help defend it. By far this guy deserves everyone's respect and admiration. Serving in the military going on 14 years myself now - I know how much this guy gave up. The 3.6 million dollar contract is worthless compared to what this man gave up, even if he did come home alive. If more Americans were like Tillman our country would be countless times better off. Thanks to the greed and self indulgment of this country, no other athlete, actor, or hollywood persona would even begin to think about standing up and fighting for what is right in this world. Instead they sit on the sidelines in their plush little worlds and let the average american defend their rights for them. HOW SAD!!!!! Mr. Tillman, you have my respect and admiration 3.6 million times over - Fair Winds and God Speed ****RIP****
