Checked the weight data on sportrider.com, website of Sport Rider magazine. Supposedly they meaure no-BS weights, consistent from bike to bike and year to year. Anyway, here's what they say:

bike peak hp@rpm peak torque@rpm wet wt dry wt

YZF-R1 ('98) 128.2 @ 10,000 70.8 @ 7750 448 419
YZF-R1 ('00) 127.8 @ 10,250 72.2 @ 8500 443 414
YZF-R1 ('02) 136.3 @ 10,750 68.7 @ 9500 438 411
YZF-R1 ('04) 158.9 @ 12,750 74.4 @ 10,000 450 421

The 04/05 is the heaviest R1 yet! Heavier than the original even. Looks like the 02/03 was the lightest.

Can anyone confirm this? Makes sense seeing as how the new model has the undertail exhaust and the new frame/swingarm casting process (which I read produces a heavier -- albeit stronger -- piece).

the weights that the factories give ( that you see in most mags and on factory websites and such ) are design weights. the companies know that the bikes aren't going to turn out that light in production. gixxers, r1's, and kawi's are all about the same weight within 5-10 lbs, which really doesn't make much difference. the hondas are about 25-30lbs more for some reason. if you go on a diet you wont have any problems and it becomes a moot point!

Well, I could care less where the R1 comes in compared to other bikes -- I was mostly curious within the R1 family. I was looking at buying a 2002 and was happy to see it was measurably lighter than even the newest model. Surprising though....

I AM curious to see where the 2006 CBR1000 comes in!

Don't forget, the manufacturers "Dry" weight is with no gas, oil, or coolant. Who knows, they might even subtract fork oil to get those low numbers. Sportrider's "Dry" weight is with no Gas (more realistic).
That's correct, no fork oil, no battery....

I weighed my 04 on a scale at work and it was 446# with half a tank of gas.

Are you really concerned about 2lbs?

In my opinion, the it doesn't matter what the weight of the new R1 is.

It doesn't drag engine cases at extreme lean like the old model did, it makes a hell of a lot more hp.
Exactly! It also feels lighter than any other R1. As for the weight gain, it has some things that WE( not everbody, but many of us asked for) Steering damper, underseat exhaust including two silencers, and ram air. All of that and making it skinny as hell, seemed to have added some weight. In comparision to my old 2000 R1, it is well worth it. The new bikes are faster, sexier, and more capable than ever before. I could try not eating so many double cheeseburgers and make up the weight difference easily. I wont be doing that anytime soon though.
