i noticed that the rear tire of the 02 R1 is narrow then the rest of the class. i think the R1 would look a hell alot better w/ a wider rear tire. I'm going for that SBK look for my bike(if it ever gets here). The question at hand is can anyone help me out that has their dream machine. What is the wides tire your able to go w/o modifing.:rock

a 200 will go on w/o mods

a 200, American 10 inch will go on the Australian model so I reakon you Americans will get away with it..... The only reason that the rear looks so small is the way in which it is built, the profile of the tyre i.e: the width and depth of the rubber.....

190/50 17" you should - it'll just go - get away with a 200/205 /50 17" on the back. If you wanted to - to keep your bike telling you the right speed - stuff around with the speedo spline, which could either be connected to with the gearbox or to the dizzy you could put a 205 /40 17 on the back and the rear tyre would look as wide as a phone book.

But remember that the 200/205 & 210 will go on but the 05 and the 10 will only 'JUST' fit...........

Most experienced riders with R1s ditch the wide 190 stock rear tires on the 00s and 01s in favor of a narrower 180. Faster turn in. The wider tires are for posing points. Narrower rear tire for cornering performance. At the track, you'll see Road race tires no wider than 180s.

Some guys just like the look of the wide tire and don't much care how it works. :)

I prefer the wide tire for the looks !! I like it when people say, "Damn look how wide that rear tire is !! Thats awesome " :rock

That's exactly what I was getting at.

Because the 200 is going to be smaller profile and the therefor you aren't going to have much touching the road unless you are straight up and down.

Thinner wide tyres are much better for the laid over contact, but if showin' off is your thing then fatties are the best....

190/180

As stated by others, the 180 is what works for racing. I've ridden with both the 190 and 180 doing the novice school, and there is a BIG difference especially noticeable in hi speed turn in. The 190 section Bridgestones that come stock ( or did on the 01 models Gixxer 1000) physically are about the same size as a 180 Dunlop for a compromise. Dunlops are generally " large" tires for their description anyways, so the 190 Dunlop will make the others appear small. I LOVE the way the 190 looks, but the 80 WORKS much better, and I'm not much for posing anyways;) Also, the 120/70 combination with the 180 is a more lineal match.
