This may have been discussed before so my apologies if it is a repost. Does anyone know why Rossi sticks his foot out through a turn sometimes like he's dirt tracking? Does anyone have any insight to this technique and its advantages? Or is it something that the king does?

I saw a guy trying to do a record motorbike jump. When he realized he was overshooting the landing ramp he stuck one leg out to create drag. Maybe Rossi is trying to get a braking advantage, like an airbrake?

I'm mostly joking, but you never know...
:lol :lol :lol

My bet is it has something do do with weighting the outside peg and maybe preparing to side it like a mx bike :dunno

who knows

I think you mean downshift.

How does he downshift with his foot 18 inches from the shifter? :dunno
I think he just meant to say that the shift pattern is reversed on GP bikes. Most of us run GP shifting as well. Its awesome, only takes a minute or so to get used to. :riding

My bad, yeah DOWNshifting...

He has to move yhis foot back onto the peg after that if he wants to be on the balls of his feet. Maybe the easiest way for him is to take the foot off and move it back onto the bike :dunno

I really don't think it's for balance, and just swinging his knee outr would give the same amount of wind resistance, at least on the same order of magnitude.

OK, here's my real theory.

He only does it when he's REALLY pushing it. I mean, to pass the leading rider, on one of the last laps of a race in the premier motorbike racing series, by delaying your braking that extra little bit, you gotta be on the ragged edge of traction and control. We know Sete or whoever doesn't want to be passed, and he's no amateur. So maybe when he's pushing that hard, and coming that close to sliding out, Rossi just feels a subconscious need to put his foot out. It may be an involuntary reaction, a Pavlovian response, a subliminal attempt to brace himself for the fall.:scared

Theory 2: Rossi is such a showman that he does it on purpose to get people like us discussing it at length on internet forums. I'm sure he browsing this thread right now, laughing maniacally...:lol :epimp

Yeah that was Seth Enslow when he did his world record attempt(From "The Hard Way DVD).

Back to Rossi though,I dont think he doesn it for any particular reason other than for simply re adjusting his foot position for cornering:D

Come on now guys.... He is just passing some gas from whatever he ate before the race. LOL.

I have no idea. Maybe (and this is a BIG maybe), he's like oh sh!t I coming in to fast to a corner and going to brake Flinstones style. But I seriously and highly doubt that is the case.

I would have to guess that he is only repositioning his foot.

OK, but why does he only seem to do it when he's really pushing it?
