SBU ECU tune ?

If question has been asked and I missed it I apologize.

I am thinking of sending my ECU to SBU to get flashed. All the reading I have done on their site states pretty much that it will be tuned for everything I would need. My question is if I have SBU flash it will I still need to get a PCV and Autotune? I believe by all the reading I have done by adding the PCV and autotune you can go above and beyond and change alot more but I dont need to do that much changing.

Next question. Is their a bigger radiator or fans that will help cool it better?

Next question. Is there a way to convert the clutch from cable to Hydraulic? Or would it be advantageous for me to just leave it as is?

Oh I have a 2009 R1.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply One2. I have been reading yours and Tads tuning and flash info but unfortunately you guys might as well have been speaking greek. I get the jest of it all...I am just struggling grasping it all.

I believe its the same as a programmer for a vehicle but all those you dont have to set individual maps and afr etc. thats the part that is getting me.

So if im comprehending it right the PCV and auto tune components stay on the bike? And if so how do you set the parameters? I was reading and someone said they were setting the maps and tuning while riding. Did I read that right? I feel so piss ignorant right now and I dont like it. Lol!

Also does SBU have a set of tunes they flash the ECU to or do I have to give them what I want the ECU flashed to?

I know you guys are probably sick of responding to these posts and I am sorry but your info is greatly appreciated. And I hope you all dont mind answering questions that maybe you have touched on.

Thanks again.

Yes, PCV and/or Autotune components remain on the bike. The latter uses the larger bung in the midpipe (aftermarket, there are no accommodations for one with the stock cat). I can't address how to set the parameters because I don't have either one yet, although that may change this fall.

As for the cooling question, you can specify to whoever is doing the flash to have the fans activate at a lower temperature. I set mine to come on @ 190 degrees F. You can get an H2O Performance additional radiator for around $700, or go whole hog and get the combined rad + oil cooler for a princely sum of $2500.

SBU has a question sheet they will email to you asking you questions about your bike. They will give you the closes fuel map.

Whoever was tuning while riding had a POD 300 that will allow you to adjust AFRs on the fly on the street.

Or they could have simply meant they were letting the PCV and Autotune do its thing.

If you download the Dynojet PCV software to your computer, you will have a slightly better understanding of how to use it.

You will not see AFR adjustments on the desktop software until the software dectects an Autotune connected. You will then be able to type in an AFR for each throttle position at any give RPM.

You can start by typing in 13.0 for all the Targeted AFRs on the map. You can leave the Targeted AFRs alone below 60% throttle if you have an SBU fuel map in the ECU. @APO2112 will explain this to you. He can also add to anything I've typed so far.

YouTube has great videos on PCV Autotune.

I've used a SBU flashed ECU on my '09 for a couple years. I the PCV auto tune is really pointless with their flash honestly. SBU has literally done hundreds of these and they've got it down to a science, you'll waste tons of time trying to "perfect" something that doesn't need the attention.

The only way I can see a PCV auto tune or any other type of active tune being useful is if you are 1) fighting for races wins, 2) making drastic changes in track locations (i.e. Utah to Florida) and 3) if you KNOW what you're doing.

As for adding a Rad check out Febur.

I'll be honest and say that the flashed fuel map alone on my bike was pig rich. The white number plate on my tail was turning brown after 1 ride.

I had no choice but to add the Autotune.

I will say that this was a much older fuel map from SBU.

My throttle map was also terrible.

The recent flash by SBU was much better although I did opt out for the fuel map and installed my own map from a Endurance Race Bike and Autotuned off of that. :)

Just flash and ride. You'll gain more speed from riding better than any black box will every give you.

My main point was is the autotune worth the investment at this stage. Not so much when SBU has done hundreds of similar flashes. Plus there's the extra expense of the PCV, then the time it takes to get it done correctly, then what happens when something doesn't work, was it SBU or the Autotune, who's to blame, ect ect ect...

I use Rapidbike autotuning now...but when I took my flashed bike to the dyno it wasn't working properly because of something I did, so the tune was off. After I learned from a professional how to use the auto correctly, everything is great but you run more risk screwing up then not if you've never used the system before. For basic basic basic mods a flash is perfect. @Banky has a full Ackrapovic with a flashed ECU and he can tell you what's what from a simple mods point of view.

I completely understand your point but superbikes and race cars aren't tuned on Dyno's, they are tuned on the track and that's where the best numbers can be made.

You don't flash just for the map; you flash for all the benefits you get from it.

My bike did NOT like the SBU fuel map. Autotune got it where it needed to be. :) Your experience may vary.

:lol

Ducati Pikes Peak race team tunes their bikes where they belong. Up on the hill, not a dyno >:)

thats all i got
:icon_confused:

a re-flash tunes your computer, not your engine; every engine needs to be tuned, period :fact

tuning with auto-tune carries a learning curve, once you got that its kind of tough to go wrong :dunno

I completely agree, a dyno is just a tool, hence why I invested in the auto tune. However I think it's not a REQUIREMENT when getting a flash.

We all have our own experiences that have lead to some interesting conclusions and ones size does not fit all.

great visual way to clear the air on generic flashes. I by no means am saying that the SBU tune is bad nor implying that "generic" is bad it´s just that all engines are different and we all live in different places that affect results too.

Your flash could have also shown a completely opposite result and it would still not mean it´s perfect for your bike.

A well setup autotune is a great investment IMO.

You guys are nuts lmao! My Flash was pretty good. But at around 4500-6k it would break up really bad and sound horrible. I couldn't deal with it it was so bad. The pcv and auto tune have smoothed it out but I still got some work to do in that area under like 50% throttle. Do they have a cheap option for an actual gauge that I can mount on the bike? I want to see my A/F's in real time.

I've been looking into the oversized radiators for a bit now and the absolute best bang for your buck for the 09/14 is on eBay right now brand new. Csf' s full sized triple pass radiator has all stock fittings and mounts for the 09/14 r1. Even mounts for the fans are there. $999 bucks. Mine is the 04/06 model or I would buy it in a heartbeat. Everything I've found for my r1 brand new is much more plus I would have to add fan mounts and the top right thermo bypass fitting to be set up for the street. The csf for the 09/14 is drop in and go street ready. I so wish they did one for the 04/06.
It looks like it wouldn't be to bad to convert it to fit my 04/06 I just wish I knew exactly what all would be involved. I know if I ever pick up a 09/14 I'd be buying one in a heartbeat.
