What are you getting to replace it?
Ah, now comes the interesting part... :p :p

Initially, I had considered buying one of these:

Initially, I wanted it to do some off-road cross country touring occasionally. But, because the wife gave up riding earlier this year she would be a passenger and it wouldn't be feasable for her on long rides.

I've always loved the FJR-1300's since they came out, and have wanted them since they did. But, I had just bought the R1 so it wasn't a possibility.

Mate, I feel your pain. However, if you are pretty keen on the FJR, pop over to the Tyre Fryers Squadron, one of our members there has recently gotten rid of his R1 and purchased a clutchless FJR...he's posted some pretty in depth thoughts on the bike. Probably be worth a read for you!

I'd vote for the FJR, I'm thinking of adding one to my garage.

That was the plan. I was going to put money down this winter and order an '07 FJR (non automatic clutch). But, the past three months have changed my riding style and what I'm looking for. I was looking at the FJR to do long distance rides with my wife cross country. But, her health isn't that great and she can't be on a bike for very long anymore. Long distance car rides get to her and we have to stop every hour or so.

Unfortunately, I've only ridden the R1 twice since July of this year. I'm a computer consultant, and I have to wear business casual to business (suit & tie) to work on occasion. It's not possible to ride to work, and carry my work clothes. It is, but it's not comfortable and I don't have access to a shower or locker room in case if I sweat on my way in to work in bumper to bumper rush hour traffic.

The FJR would work, but in a way I'd still be in the same scenario if I have no shower access. Also, I hate rush hour traffic. Especially when construction is happening and it takes me 20 minutes to go three miles.

But, after a while. I got to thinking about it and, I honestly didn't miss riding the R1 at all. Most evenings after work, I'm either training for competition or working around the house.

I thought about keeping the R1, and doing track only. But, I hate having it sit when it should be ridden. Also, I'm a cheap SOB and can't see paying to ride. Although, I was out on the track with the R1 this year, and enjoyed it. :yesnod

that bike of yours was beautiful man, very sad times 4 you now.

i can not even imagine how you could even think of saying you dont miss it, its an R1. wtf.

either way, getting old is part of life. lol

FJR's are for those who are married and who are getting on in life. ;p

Thanks Tron. The R1 is a great bike, and I agree that the 02/03's were the best years. The lines are just amazing.

But, as to heart not being in it anymore. Not true at all. I still enjoy riding, but just not the street and the track isn't for me. Fun, but not worth having thousand :dollar tied up into something I'm only going to do a very few times a year. I owned the R1 outright, so I wasn't paying for it except in insurance, tags and maintenance.

So, in a way I was looking at something like a KLR650 or some other type of enduro so I could do short local rides and hit up some of the local dirt roads. But, I'd still be on the street.

So, after some thinking, I sold the R1 and bought an '05 Yamaha YZ250F with very few hours on it. My plan is to get up to the cabin, and ride the dirt roads, fire trails and other areas I can. At the same time, I'm going to get a bike like a YZ80 or YZ85for my 13 year old son next spring so that I can teach him how to ride and we can hit up the trails and ride together. :thumbup

Here she is before I unloaded her. :rock

Thought about it. But, don't care for the looks and it's still a street bike.

I'm considering buying an extra set of rims so I can put motard tires on and hit up the local track occasionally. Still have my street gear. But, that's going to be a couple years down the line.

For the foreseeable future, I'm done riding on the street.

Fjorn. Sorry to hear/read that you got rid of your bike. I ride everyday to work in dress cloths. I pack my shirt and tie in a backpack and shoes too. I just got a pair of riding boots and I am nolongr trashing my work shoes.(was costing me alot of $$$ replacing shoes) But does your wife possible have the urge to have her own bike to ride next to you. It is more confy for her to have her own then riding in the back. But if you must have a cruiser type the FJR is IMO a good choice. It looks really confy. Have you ridden one before? And dont forget what I said about packing your dress atire. Good luck and happy bike hunting.

Thanks Beavis, but if you read down further I address a lot of things you mention.

One thing to note is that my wife gave up riding earlier this year. She took over riding my Seca-II a couple of years ago. The reason she gave it up is because she didn't get enough saddle time to stay up on skills. But, also more importantly, due to medical conditions.

Ahhahha, look who went dirty. :bow

Great choice Fjorn and congrats on selling the R1.

Dirt is such GREAT family sport. The MX tracks have father and
son, hell, the whole family out riding.

She's my first dirt bike, but I've been doing MX track every
weekend I can get. This is such an addiction. I'm hooked like a jacket on a coat hanger.

Nice work on the move mate. I sold my K4 before I moved out of the city and recently got an '06 DRZ400. It's frigging awesome to be back bashing around the bush and going on weekend camping trips with a bunch of mates on dirt bikes.
