In the market for a new helmet, $400 is what I am willing to spend. Thoughts on this brand and particular helmet? Its 40% off with good reviews!

Good Call! I like the design the air was also another option but just out of my budget because I know I will end up dropping it or scuffing it... Then probably buy a new one again.. But I plan to take care of it.

If I find a cheaper Arai one I migh buy that one..

Have you tried an arai and shoei? Those helmets are complete opposites in terms of the liner feel and fit. Ive always used arai but wanted a shoei x12 Daijairo and went to get one but the small was too small and the medium was too loose. I wear a small in arai. I'd suggest going to the local shop that way you can try before.

Around 25 years ago, I had a Shoei (don't remember the model) and replaced it with an Arai Signet Adamo replica. At the time, the Arai was head and shoulders (pun intended!) over the Shoei for comfort. After an 18 year hiatus, I needed to get a new helmet for me and one for my wife, so of course I looked for Arais on closeout. I was looking in the $300 price range and couldn't find any in our sizes, so I bought this Shoei for myself:

I bought a different color RF-1100 for my wife. We won't know the real story until my bike go on the road in spring, but from just trying them on, they seem pretty comfortable, comparable to what my Arai was back then. I would think both brands are pretty comparable safety-wise.

Buy what fits your head. Both Shoei and Arai have different shell shapes and fit heads differently. I couldn't find an Arai that fit me right after owning three different ones, the Shoei X-11 and X-12 fit me perfect, no adjustments necessary. Arai or Shoei, just get a decent helmet that fits you.

HJC is a cheaper lid and it passes the DOT standards....but I look at it like this...How much is that thing between your ears worth? If its budgetary reasons then get whats in your budget and that shoei is a good lid. Arai is a great helmet, got knocked out in one but it did its job obviously because I am typing you with no problems I am typing you with no problems I am typing you with no problems I am typing you with no problems I am typing you with no problems

I have a Shoei now and I love it..... the pinlock is awesome. My first helmet with it!!

Get what fits your head. I have read a lot about Arai helmets, and really like some of the current ones. They just don't fit my head shape, though. I have a Shoei X1100 and X12 and they both fit my head shape really nicely. However, be warned - don't just buy a helmet off the net without trying it on first. You might end up with something that gives you a headache because it doesn't fit right. And if it doesn't fit right, it means it's not going to protect your brain properly. Which is kinda the point.

I have owned a shoei quest for 5 years now.its a good helmet.only complaints I have is it fogs no matter how much you crack it and for my shape head its kind of long.So when I'm going really fast the wind gets in.Also if you turn your head at high speeds your head gets knocks around.over all I am happy but next helmet I am trying a different brand.possibly the bell star.Hope this helps

Shoei was supposed to be making a transition lens, which I was looking forward to but it's taking longer than expected. Only downside with the transition lens is it cost a pretty penny. Now I'm looking more into getting an X-14 but not until I see one in person and get a fit test.

To the OP, fit test the X-12 if you haven't already. I've had a couple X-12's, still use one for the street, and would recommend one in a heartbeat.
