Whos the shortest person you know riding an R1? For 3 years ive admired these cycles, but at 5'1", I just can't fit on them.

I currently have an FZR600, and even that took some getting used to (only get 1 toe down when I stop).

People have always told me "yeah you can get it lowered but it messes up the geometry of the bike" Bottom line is I want one, but I need feedback first. Anyone have any experience with a lowered R1? How much was it lowered? Anyone as hort as me?

Thanks---

buy stilts? :D

Welcome to the site :hellobye

I see you got a real problem.

How short (or how tall) is 5'1" in cm? I think 1 feet is 30cm.. so doing the math it would be around 153cm.
Are you of chinese origin?

I'd say it would very risky to run around on an R1 knowing that at the next stoplight I have to do everything right to be able to stop.

Lower the bike to its lowest would probably work.. but I don't think you could do all the stuff that a person with "normal" lenght and suspension settings could do.

If you weight less .. then you will accelerate fast. Always something :finger

I'm 6'4" of pure riding skill here. I make myself fit, R-1 is to awsome to resist!!!:makeout

PS-my skills could be better:thumbup

If i stand up at a intersection, it feels like a pocketbike!

It also makes attempting stand-ups seem hairy. I here there hairy feeling at first anyway:confused:

Hahhah.. I'm so jealous... My FZR is trashed right now... and I really want to upgrade.. Seems like even people that are 5'4" barely fit on.

I would seriously consider lowering the hell out of it, except fot the fact that every time i propositioned a dealer, they were like "we don't do that".

Btw. Im italian - just have real short parents. Dad was 5'3', mom was 4'11".. Nature just had no love for me.:no

Counting inches I'm 6" tall. I'm the longest in my family! I had a CBR before.. it fit me very well, the R1 is bigger but not too big.. it is also feels very good.

Maybe you should try with the R6? Or you say you don't want to go there? Want something with more grunt in it?

Italian, eh? I'm ALMOST going there soon. I'll throw something that way and it might land there.. LOL :p

4'11" is ... short..

I'm 5'7" with a very short 29" inseam, and with the preload backed off max on the R1 I fit pretty well. I was thinking of having it lowered an inch, but they say not to do it unless it's absolutely necessary. At this point I think I can just take a 1/2" out of the seat and get low enough to the ground to be comfortable.

But really being 5'1" shouldn't stop you from getting and R1, you just need to talk to a competant shop to get them to lower it w/o ruining the handling. The best place I know of is 'Aftershocks' in Mountain View (or is it Palo Alto?). Yes, they're in Northern California and it appears you're in Southern California, but I'd be more than willing to take my 2002 R1 by there so they could check out the geometry and mock up the modifications then ship the parts down to you if needed. Or just call them and ask if they know a SoCal shop.

A friend of mine, Paco, works for Mission Motorcycles in Daly City, and he's barely 5' tall, but somehow manages on any bike they bring in there, from R1s to 929s to GSXR1000s, personally it just seems to take a little more forethought when coming to a stoplight, and especially so on any sort of incline at all, eventually you'll get used to it and just 'plan ahead' and have one foot ready to go automatically.

DO IT! :rock

Dozer, thanks for the informative post.. Im stoked that you would be so willing to help me, but i'd rather explore the costs and possiblities of these modifications prior to making you run around! Could you give me an email address or some contact information of someone I can reach at Aftershocks? My first bike was an Kawa Ex250, upgrading to the FZR was tough at first but later became second nature..... Id be stoked if i was able to finally get on an R1.. Thanks! :thumbup

I'm only 5'4", and I have the stoplight thing down to a science. I don't think I could ever touch flat-footed on any of my bikes. I've been riding streetbikes for 16 years+, and I would advise against lowering the bike - let the bike handle the way it was meant to, and set up the suspension according to your weight; you'll be glad you did. Finesse is the name of the game. While your buddies are spending money to shave weight, you can save the cash(from lowering). I'm only 150lbs, and some of my riding buddies are 200 - how much does it cost to cut 50lbs off an R1?:p

Okay when I first got on my R1 I was like "how the hell am I going to ride this thing". I'm 5'8 though and at the time I thought I was short for the bike... then I got on my friends R1 that he lowered and it felt right. So I dropped mine about 3/4 inches in the front and everything worked out fine for me. Then as I started to ride more often I saw guys that were 5'1 riding R1's that were not lowered...

So I say go for it... how often are you going to be stopping anyways .. if you stop to often then you shouldn't be riding in the area...

"yeah you can get it lowered but it messes up the geometry of the bike" ... who cares .. it's your bike and are you a die hard racer ..if not then lowering your bike shouldn't be a problem ... I lowered mine and I love it even more cause it fits like a glove..

how much? It's free courtesy of your R1 member from this forum ... loosen the triple clamp in the front .. I say no more than 1 inch .. just watch out when parking your bike (kick stand will be effected).. if you need assistance post a thread .. plenty of helpful members on this forum..

Swede, I didn't know you were 6 inches tall!!!! What do you ride a 1/18th scale:D

oh , and 6 inches (6") is considered average here in the states. Don't feel bad:finger

Finally, I got my "close your shield dumb ass" revenge!!

Hi SigEpUCI,

Aftershocks info can be found at http://www.aftershocks-suspension.com/

As for lowering your bike...I've done some extensive research into this and my opinion is that you shouldn't do it unless you absolutely feel you need to. Just my opinion. That being said....if you DO decide to lower it, keep in mind that, in addition to suspension work, you may need to buy new rearsets and a new high mount pipe. Ground clearance is a major concern once you start lowering a bike more than an inch or so. And like everyone else says, start with the seat first. Good luck! :hellobye

Me too

I am Only 5 feet 0 inches and I am a girl. I have a 2000 cbr f4 and that was my first sportbike I thought I was not going to be able to handle it so I bought the dogbone at http://www3.sympatico.ca/a.jones/RHA.HTM and lowered my f4 the handling is the same :thumbup The only bad part was the leaning my footpeg scraped so I got new rearsets and the problem was solved. Then I borrowed my friends 2001 r1 and fell in love with it I cant reach the floor with both feet but one is good I am getting my 2002 red r1 this week and hope its the same other wise i will also lower it.

OMG Im in love... hehe.. do you have long legs? Is that a stock R1? Im impressed, when i sat on one at the dealer before getting my FZR, i couldn't even scrape the ground with my toe, if i can get it modded so i can even toe the ground with one foot ill be happy. Im going to go try out some R6's this week, ill post back here when i know if im screwed or not.

I think that the r6 is higher in seat hight. I feel much better on the r1. Dont worry if you really want the r1 bad youll find a way to ride, thats what i did. And no I dont have long legs I just balance myself from side to side. :p People see me and say I am crazy because the bike looks huge when i drive it. I will post a pic as soon as I get a camara.:hellobye
