Many people do not understand why oil needs to be changed even if the engine is only run here and there.

Water vapor and combustion by-products mix and form acids in the oil. Acids will eat up metal parts if not treated. Oil has additives to combat this referenced in what is known as TBN. TBN is the ability of the oil to neutralize acidity and lowers over time as it does it's job.

It is not a good idea to store for more than 2 months without changing the oil and then do not start the engine during that storage period if you are not going to ride.

Do not exceed the time limit on the oil. Severe service limits are usually recommended.

The TBN (ability of oil to control acidity) continues to deplete even in periods of non use which is why for most oils, it is recommended to store on New Oil and filter.

i change mine at least three times a yr. more depending on mileage

 

idk bout the time interval but i ride a bunch but its usually not an issue

but a year is a longtime on oil

i use the 6months tops as a reference point so i really would never run oil thats a year oil

my truck gets a change every6 months if i dont hit 3k and that is as far from a performance engine as they come

 

6 months, 6k miles. and a coolant flush once a year.

 

I hope not 6K on a petroleum or faux synthetic...

Although 2 years is recommended on regular Anti-Freeze, 1 year is better than going too long.

However, AMSOIL Anti-Freeze is rated at 7 years in a gasoline engine.

Just went through the R1 manual & read the periodic maintenance section,
for oil change yamaha says change after 1k, then after that every 10k or annual, that means 1 year i guess is the max..

 

mine reads
600 miles/1000 km or 1 month
4000 miles/7000 km or 6 months
8000 miles/13000 km or 6 months

 

you talking about the owners manual right? "periodic maintenance & minor repair" page 6-2? where does it say 6months for oil change? i don't see 6months mentioned anywhere? can anyone else confirm this??

why would you want to go a yr? oil change is the cheapest maintenance you can perform. why not protect your investment and keep fresh oil in it?

 

agreed btw i have the euro R1, could be yamaha is advising different intervals for US & Euro models? i thought the bikes & engines are same :dundun:

should be the same. im pretty sure my manual said the same as joe black but i cant remember for sure i glanced through it quick when i first got the bike havent looked at it since lol

hmmm.... it says check. doesnt mean that it doesnt need changed. according to that you also dont need to change your oil filter every year. which is beyond logic. i dont know i suppose a guy could follow that if he really wanted but i sure wouldnt just my opinion

doubt that, i use motul 300v normally but been using 15w/50 but now wondering if i shuold use 10w/40, whats the difference between these any ideas?
