Tall Rider Thinking About Getting An R1 As A Commuter

Hey guys,

New to your forums and would really appreciate some input. I live in New York and sold my Triumph Bonneville a month ago ( I bought it in another state because i required a vehicle to get around). When I came back to New York a year ago, I found my Bonneville too weak to handle NYC traffic which is very impulsive and requires good torque to get out of certain situations where cars simply don't pay attention to you. My Bonneville was under powered and I simply felt uncomfortable riding it in New York traffic. I always wanted a sports bike and since I still love the culture and idea of having a motorcycle, I am currently back in the market for a bike.

Some info on me. I'm about 6'0-6'1 and weigh just about 190 pounds. I have pretty long and burly legs due to being an avid road cyclist. I already went to a dealership and sat in an R1 and R6. From what I understand the R1 is more geared towards a taller rider and it should be more comfortable for taller riders. I plan on getting a bike for very short commutes which will last no longer than one hour.

Can anybody give me some input on how an R1 feels on the road versus an R6? I unfortunately don't have the luxury of actually test riding the bikes. Thanks for your time.

I have a friend who has owned and R6 and rode an R1 and said that they were huge pains to ride for more than an hour. He is also around 5'8''. Does short height make it more uncomfortable to ride?

And how are rides for more than an hour for someone with my build?

I think people have it wrong. I think the shorter the rider, the more uncomfortable the ride i.e. short arms.

Short arms will have you laying on the tank.

I have yet to meet somebody in person that claim that the R1 ,09+ , is uncomfortable. If so, I would suggest getting a T-Rex. :crash

I have an 05, and my commute is a little over an hour each way. I find it to be a very comfortable bike, and I don't mean tolerable I do mean actually comfortable. I am not 6'4 like you but I find it to have more room than many other sportbikes. Ive sat on most other brands although have not taken them all for longer rides, and the R1 Ive found is the most comfortable.

I'm 6'2 210 pounds with a 02 r1 and only discomfort I find is my tail bone and my right wrist on long rides unless I'm able to hit a lot of twisties and move my body and throttle hand and I've gone for 3+ hours on windy roads and I'm fine. Just stop to grab fuel and back riding. My buddy's 5'8 155 and he's got a 05 r6 and we switch every once in a great while but his r6 kills my legs I feel more hunched but I think with a set of rear sets could solve that. My buddy complains of his shoulders and both wrists on my r1 but he likes the low end torque so much more. Each person has there own feel and likes when riding so won't know till you try

I like my 09 R1 I'm 6'5-6'6 280 lbs and I am perfectly comfortable on it.
I love the R6 so much that if i could i would go for it. But size is whats stopping me. Love how the R6 screams with a full Leo Vince. I'm still crossed whether i like the cross plane or not.

more than the height or physical comfort. Are you ready for a 1000 cc bike? Being a cyclist, you'll be fine with the reach and the bending of the spine.

Pretty sure I'm ready for a litre bike. I'm coming from a Triumph Bonneville which I have rode for over a year, and naturally I got really bored of it and always wanted a sports bike from the beginning.
And yes, being a cyclist I think will help with the feel. I've done 100 mile bike rides and I am more than aware of the pain the body feels when it is in an uncomfortable position for a longer period of time.

Flame suit prepared....:flame:

If this is really a key consideration, have you considered a twin? Don't get me wrong, the R1 is a plenty capable commuter, I commute mine fairly regularly, have no issues and enjoy it what ever the riding. Obviously I love my R1, but if it's torque on tap you want right across the rev range a twin is hard to beat IMO.
Have considered a twin, but more inclined to get an R1 instead ;)

:lol

I'm 6'1", 195lbs with long arms and legs. Love my R1. However, if you're after torque, I would stay away from the 04-08 years. Best looking bikes ever, but not much low end power. Top end screamers. The early years had sweet torque down low and so do the xplane bikes, IMO.

I don't think the R1 is a good city bike to be honest. It runs very hot in traffic. It is plenty nimble, but I think there are much better city bikes out there. How about a nice dual sport? Plenty of torque, off road capability (IE: sidewalk, back alleys, pot holes, uneven pavement), and fairly tall so you can see over most cars. When ever I get stuck in traffic on my 04 R1 I usually end up thinking "well this sucks". I would be afraid to park a R1 in the city as well unless you have a really secure parking area.

Commuting? In NYC? On an R1?

There are a million other bikes that instantly come to mind that would be better suited to the task of blasting around the Big Apple. In my opinion. And this is coming from an owner of two R1s who happens to be 6'4" and 240lbs and who has been in NYC on his R1 and has hated every minute of it.

But hey, it's your money. Go nuts.
