Hey guys, I had to replace my throttle cables, and i cant get the return cable (bottom one) back in the slot. Ive worked on it a few hours and am just too frusterated . I cant get a finger in there to move it. And the throttle body looks like a pain in the A_ _ to get off. anyone know a trick? or am i in for a nightmare?

You need to spend more time trying to get it in there. I got mine in there without having to take off the trottle bodies one time. But it took forever. Take off the throttle bodies if you have to, it's not all that bad.

Just use a set of needle nose pliers to hold onto the cable with one hand, use the other to move the spring tensioned slot that it slides into out so you can access the hole. With a little finesse you should be able to pop it right in. I used some mini pliers that I bought from home depot $10 for set of 5, different styles. The hooked needle nose worked perfect!

good luck

yeah my prob with the throttle bodies is they are all on the intake with clamps held by hex bolts (as if yall didnt know) the middle two can get to ok....the outside ones look impossible especially the one on the right sitting on the bike. the head is facing the frame and there is a servo motor of somekind there. i was messing with needle nose, but i may try with a smaller pair. i could get the end in the hole, but couldnt get the cable to swivel around and get it in the groove, and couldnt get a finger in there to swivel it. prolly worked on it between an hour and 2 hours and just got too mad. u know i had the old cable unhooked in about 2 minutes :rant oh well ill keep tryin. thx for the replies all

Just keep at it. Usually takes me 5-10 minutes when I do it on my own. 2-3 minutes when the wife helps.

There are two ways I found to do this job..

First of all, whichever way you do it, connect the bottom (difficult) one first and when you have the bottom nipple located do not pull or push the twistgrip end of the cable until you have both the cables secured or the nipple can fall back out of the pulley eye and you have to start again...bummer.

Method 1

Remove the 10mm nut holding the throttle pulley to the spindle and take the pulley off the spindle. The cable can then be connected easily.

Make sure you secure the return spring and bush when removing pulley or bush will launch itself. When you re-tension the spring remember that it goes round the nylon bush twice to obtain the correct return spring force. A piece of hooked wire will make this easy.

Method 2

Feed a piece of thin fishing line through the bottom eye of the spindle and then tie the line to the cable nipple. You can then pull it back through and with a bit of fiddling the nipple will locate in the eye.

Tie the line loose end off to something then the nipple wont fall back out even if you move the cable. When you have it all done just cut the line at the spindle.

Hope this helps..it is a bitch of a job. First time I tried this I was at it for 4 hours..(its a pice of piss on the carbed bike)

Take care

thx guys :hellobye yeah i thought about takin the pulley off, but decided not to mess with it cuz of the spring. I figured id get it off and have a hard time getting it wound back around. I will use you guys advice, and im also gonna try using a small angle pair of needle nose pliers. Thanx again guys, you rock :rock and i guess if i cant get it, ill be back on here:crash

Yamadude,

If you have disconnected the spring then when you retension it the spring hook will have to be wound round the spindle bush two times to get the correct tension. If you wind it round only once it looks correct but when you have it all back together you will find you have a problem with the throttle "retuning" (too slow). I know..unfortunately.

Hope this answers your question.

Take care

Dont try to tension the spring until after u have the spindle and both the cables secured otherwise u could loose the bottom cable again!!

Then just use a piece of thin wire with a hook on it to pull the spring hook round the spindle (twice) then hook on its lug per the photo Im going to try to post. this bit is the easy bit but I feel your pain..
