so what exactly makes a bike totalled?? i am pretty sure that mine is but i have to wait for the adjuster to come look at it. i have never dealt with an insurance company before about wrecks, so i was wondering if you could give me some insight on what is going to happen if it is totalled or if i have to get it fixed.

thanks guys

Well if your frame is bent theirs a good chance they will total it i had an 03 R1 that had 5600 in damage and they still had it fixed but the frame was fine. They said if the frame was bent or had a dent in it they would have totaled it. You can PM me if youd like with specific damage or pictures and i maybe able to help you more

$5600.00......almost exactly the same amount the damages on my '03 though my frame was included on the estimate. All I saw was a deep small scratch on it..... totaled out. Obviously the dealership that did the estimate wanted to fix it and I didn't. Forturnately the adjuster saw the issues the same way as I. Hell, a new frame for an '03 is only $1200.....when I saw that on the estimate I started sweating it as I obviously didn't want it repaired if it required a new frame as I never would have gotten what it was worth if I chose to sell it IMO. Obviously my dealership wasn't too happy as they would have made out much better fixing the bike than selling me a new one. I did purcahse my '05 from them.

State Farm chose to give me 8200.00 for it plus the sales tax and a bit more for odds and ends and I ended up getting 8996.00 for the bike which financed my '05. Would have been lucky to get 5000.00 out of it had it been fixed. This was last September.

Thanks State Farm.....:)

I was told if repairs exceed either 75% or 80% the value of the bike.....can't remember which is considered totaled. In my case the bike was worth 8200.00 I was told by the adjuster.

EDIT: Mistake on my part.....72% was what I was told at the time according to State Farm. I don't know if that's a law of some sort or a formulation used only by State Farm and/or other insurers. You should ask your adjuster.

Whatever your situation may be just remember to fight for what you truly believe you deserve.....;)

I bought the 03 brand new for 7600 and then after the crash i ended up only paying 3grand total for the bike all together.........brand new R1 for 3grand ya cant beat that. My frame was fine and the bike still ran great (had to ride it a mile crashed to the nearest house) so i was happy that they let me fix it.

Totality will depend on the insurance company. Most use a percentage, and rarely go by 100% in terms of replacement cost. 72% sounds about right. So whatever the value of your bike is...if the amount of damage to fix it meets or exceeds 72% of the bikes worth, consider it totaled. Same goes for cars. But again, that number will change depending on the insurance company. there are exceptions of course...but thats a general rule.

well i have USAA as my insurance company. i guess they are sending out an adjuster within the next few days. probably will be here on monday or tuesday.

alright here is the story. i was riding around some twisties near my house. i just started leaning into this nice turn when my back tire started to bounce like crazy. the road was all messed up with pot holes and stuff. well instead of letting the back end get away from me i stood the bike up straight and started to brake. as i got towards the shoulder i hit gravel and the bike went into a slide. me and the one went off this little 3 foot embankment to meet a bunch of rocks on the other end. mild scratches and stuff to me ( i was wearing gloves, armored jacket, helmet, jeans, and boots.) all the panels of the bike are messed up, the right handle bar is snapped off. the rear end seems loose, looks like the bolts that connect the rear to the main frame are snapped. pretty much the whole right side of the bike is trashed. i will try and post some pictures as soon as i can. man this sucks. i am just thankful that i came out if it. i am sure that if i wasn't wearing gear i would have been trashed.
