alot of people on this forum are gonna tell you about maintance,service,blah,blah...in fact ducs are easier to work on and parts are bout the same price as yamaha parts, and yes they are tempermental at times but you learn all that with ownership of one...personally if i was you i would stay away from that model year and stick with 07+ 1098,1198, which is a superb model with a good history...but if you want a bike with zero probs and no character stick with r1!...lol

Do you want an ugly bike?
-yes, trade for the duc.
-no, keep your yamaha

Do you want a bike that works 60% of the time, all the time?
-yes, trade for duc
-no, keep your yamaha

Do you like paying stupid amounts of money for parts and labor on things you could do yourself?
-yes, trade for duc
-no, keep your yamaha

After you lay your bike down, (god keep you safe) and you must replace tank, fairings etc are you ok forking over a check with multiple zeros?
-yes, trade for duc
-no, keep your yamaha

thats a vague ass question man.
are you asking which is faster?
are you asking which is worth more?
are you asking which handles better?
are you asking which is cheaper to run / maintain?
are you asking which is a better street / track bike?

if you like the 999, do the trade, if not, keep your R1.

The quality and finish on Ducatis at that time was exceptional. The paint is amazing.

However it has downsides, it's HEAVY to turn... heavy to ride... the clutch is VERY heavy (can be made better with Oberon slave) and the riding position is extreme compared to your R1. The front cylinder has issues with water ingress due to location which can mean it running on 1 cylinder quite easily, usually at non opportune moments :)

The electrics were loads better than early models.

The main difference is, you can buy an R1, ride it, use it and put it away, come back in 3 weeks, do the same again... The Ducati... hmmmm. Not so good at that. You'll need a dealer for servicing, which isn't cheap.

I've owned 6 Ducatis and loved each and every one of them... but not sure i'll own another.

They handle very well, I personally hate the hydraulic dry clutch. There is no slipping the clutch it is either "on" or "off". The looks don't bother me much, although it is my least favorite body style. As far as an investment I think it is a good trade as the older Desmo Duc's are going up in value the older they get. As for a riding standpoint I think it is bad idea, if you plan to ride it I would keep the R1. It's apples and oranges at this point, not a real fair comparison.
