Triple tree nut was loose!

Started feeling a weird kind of play on the front end. When I was coming to stops, the steering would jilt left or right less about one degree depending on what direction I pushed the handle bars in.

Also the steering dampener was making a clicking noise. So I attributed the two.

I finally got a chance to bring it in with concerns of safety. Never felt that on the 2015.

They looked at a couple of things. It turned out to be the front top nut. Apparently it was loose. FML.

This is something to check. As I don't know how many others came off the production line like this.

Checks yours to make sure.

It mattered enough for the performance on the front.

The bike feels so much more secure now. Before I would hit bumps and would hear and feel a clacking sound. When I would hit bumps on the road, the clacking would persist and the front end would shake noticeably more.

Now that it has been tightened:
1: it doesnt clack on bumps
2: it doesnt dance left and right 1-2 degrees off center when I am braking at a light
3: it feels much better when cornering and leaning.


Again, Explaining it and feeling it are two different things. I wouldnt ever tell you to loosen your top nut and try it and see, because that would be stupid. But guys, keep an eye on it.

The reason the nut is not installed at the factory is because the metal crate has a bracket that attaches to the steering stem with a temporary-throw away nut. That bracket needs to be removed when taking the bike out of the crate and then the steering stem nut is installed.

So the steering dampener makes a clicking noise regardless of that nut being correctly torqued or not. But the. Important factors have to do with braking and the bike seeming dances back and forth. And hitting bumps and it clicking or clacking.

ive heard of this issue on all bikes from my suspension guy. To remedy, he uses anti seize on the threads to ensure the threads are being torqued to the true spec vs marring together with the nut, and not really bolting down like it should.

not totally superficial it will ever so slightly wiggle. it is a pretty easy things to diagnose though anytime it feels weird or clicks i would say to check the triple bolts and steering head bearings for adjustment not really a major safety concern just part of maintenance since they wear. also this is supposed to be part of the first service a second tech other then the one who put it together is supposed to go over all the important bolts n nuts to make sure none have come loose or weren't tightened correct at the factory
