do you have another dealership closer than just yamaha?

I know for a fact Carquest carries a filter for the R1

 

not sure where your located..but why not make 1 more trip to the yamaha shop...and pick up 4 or 5 filters at once. Or buy online

 

you should talk to your advanced guy, see if he can order them for you. I know most of them I been to either have the Fram filters instock or can get them in a day or two.

 

Fram filters are junk!!! Use the manufacturer recommended filter. Like previously mentioned, buy more than one filter when you go to the dealership or order them online.

Looks like it's the same as later bikes. I use Purolator PL14612 or PL14610. They are like $5 at AutoZone.

 

I'm using the L14610. It's a little longer than the 14612, so I figured I could benefit from the extra capacity and filter media (since I had the room). I was hesitant of using the PL gold filter from what I've read in threads. Some people think it can put too much pressure on the oil pump?? But I'm still afraid because I'm running the cheaper filter, lol. :dundun:

 

I've read the same thing, other than the blurb on the Purolator site there is nothing that shows that they should not be used. Some of the antiquated twins (HD) have very low pressure oil systems, (maybe because HD is typically dry sump?). From what I have read that was the reason for the warning on automotive filters in general.
I've been running PL14610 or 12's (depending on what I have laying around) for years. The only bikes I did not use them on were my Suzuki's (different thread pitch). It's the same filter I use on my 675 track bike, in my WRX and in my mom's Nissan.

 

I'm running the PL14612 now on the R1, no issues. I was running Mobil1 M1-110 filters before, also no issues, The Purolator gold filters are cheaper ($) tho so that is why I switched. Both the R1 and the 05 636 track bike use them.
