What is going on nowadays?

I was waiting at a light today behind two cars and a motorcycle. The light turned green and no one moved. I saw the bike stalling a couple of times. I figured it was probably some guy on his first bike having problems. I tried to get into the right lane, but couldn't due to traffic. By the time I finally got into the right lane, the light had turned red. I pulled up and noticed that the bike was a GSX-R 1300 ! I told him to let the clutch slip a little more instead of just popping it in. When the light turned green I took off, but the poor guy stalled it again :(. As I drove away, I saw him finally get it going :) .

It made me really sad to see all of this. Perhaps what made it worse in my mind was that the guy bought a Hayabusa as his first bike. I don't think it's an issue to buy a powerful motorcycle as your first bike, so long as you at least know the basics of operating it (BTW I'm getting a ZX-10R for graduation :D, but will post here as this place is the coolest! ). Anyway I just hope that the guy is responsible with his motorcycle and doesn't push the bike more than he's ready for at any certain point.

What do you guys think of this?

I think that the rider is having a hard enough time getting the thing going, let alone highsiding the thing in the twisties.

He has yet to grasp the concept of a clutch; maybe he will tire of the motorcycle before he figures out that it has a throttle.

On the other hand, maybe the motorcycle had a problem, or maybe he was thinking of buying a motorcycle, and his friend who owned a Hayabusa let him borrow it for the afternoon to see if he really liked them enough to buy one.

I agree with you about the fact that many people buy too big of a bike or a performance bike when they should be starting on something a little more user friendly. I started on a 750 Katana and I'm glad I did. I would have kicked my ass if I would have dropped a new bike. I see people roll up ro our group on a new 954, R6 gsxr 1000 and r1's only to hear about how they wrecked it a couple weeks later. The other problem is they see many of us flying through corners and pulling stunts and they don't realize many of us have been riding for years. We didn't start out taking corners at high speeds we worked up to it. People just need to think before they plop down the green for a bike that looks cool and rates the highest in a magazine shootout.

That's what scares me. A week later he might manage to work the clutch. Then having built up a little confidence, he gets goaded into racing and hurts himself :(. I don't know, it's just that this irresponsible motoring is starting to bug me (especially the 4 wheelers :rant ). America is just way too accommodating of bad motorists.

Just wonderin why is says below your name that you have 'the one' but you are appologizing for being here, and you say you are getting a ZX-10R for graduation? Am I missing something or do you really have an 04 R1 now and getting a 10R for graduation?

Haha, no I don't own a 2004 R1. I joined this forum a while back when I was still debating which bike I wanted to purchase. The looks of the R1 drew me in back then, but I decided that the lighter weight of the ZX coupled with it's more linear powerband (according to Sportrider anyway) would make it a better bike to own at this point because I haven't ridden since I was in Austria (when I was 6 and 7 and racing my dirtbike). I will change that information right away. :hellobye

I don't want to have go (each to his own I say), but if you haven't ridden since you were 7 then you should buy a bike based 'purely' on looks.

Why? Because you won't be able to exploit the 'lighter weight' and 'linear powerband' until long after the ZX10 has passed into motorcycle history.

Now if you had said that you were buying the ZX10 over the R1 because of the 'naughty green colour' I would have been with you all the way!!

Either way dude, take it steady once you get it okay? ZX10 or R1 could kill you quicker than a landmine.

Thanks, I definately will! But I think you misunderstood my remarks about the ZX's lighter weight and linear power delivery. I value those atributes in the ZX because they will make the motorcycle easier to control, not because they make it a faster motorcycle. Maybe in a couple of years I will be able to fully exploit the bike's potential, until that time, I can still have fun (lots of it :D) riding on a warm, sunny day!

This is why our insurance rates are so high, and some companies won't even insure liter bikes.......IMO..

Well one of those new riders on a GSXR went qown yesterday. What a schmuck, riding 80 in a turning lane passing cars? WTF Broken collar bone a road rash. NO med insurance, no Insurance on the bike and it slide into a 04 Yukon. Oh and the vin doesn't match the plates so it probably isn't even registered. WTF That's why us good riders have such bad reps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guy's look at the bright side, we are thinning the herd of the meak and mindless......

Anyone that chooses that type of bike as a first learns the hard way....hopefully they don't take out any SMART people with them...
