Check out this thread for testing your stator : http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31255 , it's around AU$90-$160 to get the stator rewound if that's the problem, much cheaper than replacing it.:thumbup
Depends on the model, 04-08's have an inspecton cover with an o ring that can leak, but oil spreads in wind. It could of come from further forward too.
Yeah good luck, I'm stuck at the flywheel on an 01 gearbox rebuild! There is a great thread on flywheel removal, with lots of ideas in the "help" section. The three jaw puller failed, the threaded Yam style puller failed, I've just threaded three of the holes in the flywheel so that I can bolt a big plate to it, to pull on with another three jaw! Wish me luck too.
Yep SA. I've tried a rattle gun too, Make sure that the bolt you're using as a puller is a lower tensile strength than the flywheel or the thread in the f/w may strip. I used an 8.8 bolt, I believe the f/w is 13. I'm avoiding using heat 'cause I don't want to warp the f/w or damage the stator. Let me know how you go, are you planning on using an oxy set for heat or a butane torch or what?
dunno yet.. don't have either.. have a mig, was thinking about winding a long bolt in and laying a couple of beads down the side of the bolt....shouldent get too hot...
Good idea, the idea is to get the flywheel hot, but not the end of the crankshaft. A weld would do it, you'll have to work fast and be careful of spatter. Maybe grease the face of the flywheel to stop any spatter from sticking. Keep me posted, I've only got an arc at home but I'll borrow a mig from work if it works. GOOD LUCK again mate.:thumbup
PS If you haven't planned to already...taper the end of the bolt to match the tapered hole in the crankshaft. This will keep the force centered and give you more area to push on. I've been successful many times on dirtbikes and smaller capacity roadbikes before, this is the first one thats got me stumped!
