Def an 07, in 08 the forks are a brass color...well, unless they're aftermarket...but my guess is 07

 

Look at the VIN, the 10th number is the model year.

 

Thats where it gets very confusing, and also why I asked for everyones opinion. According to the stamped VIN and title, its a 2006 model. Check it out....

 

The bike is an 07.

Based on the crank cases, frame, body color, wheel rim tape, front brakes, etc...

 

I second looking at the vin. And I also think you need to tell the owner to run that chain through the frame (or swingarm) and not the wheel.

The VIN says its a 2006... This is what put me on this wild goose chase. WTF!!! How is this possible? Since the 2007/08 engine wont fit into the 2006 frame, I am baffled... Here is the VIN. Any chance its some kind of Limited Edition 06??

 

i had a pic of mine that ill look for.

all the yamaha vins i have ever seen have been perfectly straight and square, like they were laser etched, that one looks like it was stamped by hand with a hammer and punch set.

it probably was crashed.

 

That VIN is definitely hand stamped. Factory VINs aren't all crooked. It looks like the frame was replaced and it would seem that the title/VIN don't match that bike.

the body work is definitely an 07/08 :fact. As bwh998 said, the vin appears to be stamped by hand. seems a bit fishy. are you looking to buy it? If so, have the vin number checked out.

HAHAHA... No, it has been replaced.. All I have to do is replace the Crankcase cover and we will be in business.....

 

The Vin on the Title matches the frame. I just dont know what to make of it. What led me on this wild goose chase, was when I ordered the Crankcase cover, and they sent me a crankcase cover that didnt fit.

 

I'm saying that the title doesn't match the bike. I could stamp an R1 VIN on a Fiero but it doesn't make it one.

Yes the title says 2006. Is there a possiblity that this bike was made at the end of 2006? That would explain the stamp... but not really, if it was Manually stamped. I dunno what to make of it.

 

l;looks like its what we were discussing before, most likely stolen bike, and 06 frame is cheaper than 07 08 frame with clean title, so guy bought it and cleaned up the frame and stamped it most likely by hand.

well if he stole it then ill steal it from him, i could get that rear off so fast, just rip off the rear seat and the tools will probably be right there to do the job haha. or chain cutters. i think it was wrecked or something and a fishy rebuild job.

The guy selling it, is a good friend of mine, I sold him my R6, and he turned around, and traded it for this R1 with some guy in NJ. He was able to get it through MD. Inspection, and MVA without any problem. He had it serviced a few times, but no one ever made mention of the issue we are currently discussing. As a matter of fact, My buddy didnt even know until a week ago that something was wrong when the clutch cover that we oredered didnt fit.

 

its def an 07 body. maybe it was manufactured in 06, explaining the vin :dunno

If is an 06 title then that bike is stolen n they just stamped d numbers on it.
I own an 06 n an 07 my 07 was that same color. So I know for sure by looking at d vin pic that somebody stamped it manually n did a bad job doing it!! Lol..

Have you thought about looking at the vin on the motor to check and see if that matches the frame. just my .02

 

Yes, I have considered it, but I am not to sure where to find the engine number, and when I do find it, what resource would I use to verify that it matches with the frame?

It doesn't matter if it was made in 2006, it is a 2007 model, so that is what should be on the VIN and on the title. There is no way somebody got an 06 frame and put an 07 engine and everything else on it, either. That is an 07 frame that is not the original one for that bike, that has had the 06 VIN manually stamped on it and put on the title by some idiot who didn't know his model year bikes. Either that, or he came by an 06 title (somehow) and stamped this stolen or wrecked/rebuilt bike with the VIN to match the title. Either way, this bike/sale/seller is bad news. :fact

 

Call the PoPo and have them run the vin. See if it's stolen. Your buddy is probably SOL.

 

Yes, I ran it through the database, and it was clean and legit. At least as an 06.. Now when I get my hands on the Engine number, that could be a different story. I need to find out how to match the engine number up with the VIN, and if by some crazy twist of fate it matches... I am going to look for the nearest window, and jump, as to this would ad even more confusion.
