With the setup I've been using I've been getting about 40k out of a set consistently. My original chain wore FAST, replaced at 14k.

My buddy Scott has an '06 FZ1 with almost 50k miles and it's still on the original chain/sprockets.... he does need to change them here soon though

 

I put about 32,000 on my 06 before changing. A lot of it just depends on your riding style as well. Mine would have lasted longer but I enjoyed the occasional 2nd gear clutch up so I'm sure those kinds of things take there toll on the chain and sprockets. Not including the clutch as well!

 

I put 1 - 2 seasons on a chain and sprocket setup...so 4-8k miles

 

If I had your money, I'd just throw mine away. :fact

 

Impressive #'s, some of you. I've gotten 20 and 24k out of one before but some of you are in the 3X,XXX range which is quite impressive.

 

i dont track mine so i'm sure i'll get a good run out of my 520 kit...

currently 8k miles on stockers, gonna swap 'em out obviously... but i put 25k miles
on my r6 n' never bothered swapping it out... the kid that bought it probably doesnt even know you can change 'em... chances are its still on there.. :lol

 

Got about 16K outta my 04 R6, and I've got about 9K on my R1 right now with origional chain and sprockets. I will change the chain and sprockets on both bikes NEXT winter when they're put up again.

 

I got about 20k on my '10 right now with original sprockets. Ride it through rain, sand, salt and anything New England weather has to offer. Proper maintenance goes a long way. It still looks great

 

I know Blktop MotoCafe has over 50k on his chain and it still looks great. Not sure how far it's stretched. I think he has an 08 R1.

I'm wondering what Fanco802, Thirdgenlxi, and Matt600r are using to clean and lube. I just read a 13 page thread on here yesterday and it's got me convinced to use nothing but WD-40 for cleaning and lubing... Lubing once a week, or every refueling (usually 100 miles). I soaked the hell out of my chain and rode it the next morning and had hardly any oil fling off on the swingarm...

I do need to change the chain however whoever had my bike before me did a piss-poor job at maintaining the chain. It has a DID 530 chain and +2 Vortex sprocket in the back.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but DID is not OEM if I have it right. So I'm like WTH! My bike only has 21k on it and the 'what I believe to be' second chain is already shit! It was really dried out with red dust on several links. spent two hours with WD-40 and a toothbrush... I think I got 1/2 grime off it from previous lubes. lol.

So, guessing, prolly 10k each chain which I think is crap. Question though... is it possible to adjust my chain without a stand? I'm getting a swingarm stand next week for 45 bucks, but I'd like to tighten my chain up before then if possible.

 

I am the second owner, so I have only put about 1200 miles on it. But I used Maxima chain wax. I clean the chain with wd40.

Yea, I was just reading around and I guess a few different bikes come with DID, but just the cheaper ones. So maybe that is the original OEM i have, in that case 21k ain't too terrible I guess.

...it's still in nasty shape though. lol even for 21k

 

My current sprocket and chain are pretty much done now. I flipped the rear to get me through my last trackday of the year at Barber last Nov. I got about 6-7k miles out of them and have new ones waiting to go on. Good thing I oredered two rears this time...it took Harris two months to make and ship my replacements.

 

so... I'm still wondering LOL, can I adjust my chain tension without a stand? or is it a pain in the arse?

 

Adjust it on side stand no worries, did mine yesterday. 32mm wrench for main axle nut, leave slightly snug then screw the adjusters back EVENLY. Job done

Awesome, thx man. Like I've said before, I can work on cars no problem, but this is the first bike I've ever worked on. I thought it looked like I could get away with it, but thought I'd ask the experience crowd here.

ps Lubing every 100 miles is not necessary. The one and only reason to lube a chain is to keep the O-rings from cracking. Lubing every 300-400 miles is sufficient.

 

I've currently got 7,500 out of mine and haven't had to adjust it yet. The oem chain was still on it when it was due so 37,000km out of a kit ain't bad.

The previous owner did not treat the bike with respect so it's impressive it held up to the abuse.
