I've been hearing a lot about it too. It's mostly track guys but here's the rub; it's not from over-revving, it's from too low oil pressure a LOW rpm. A lot of guys are loosing motors as they're tooling back to the pits. Spun bearings. Friend of a friend is now on his third motor. I'm not sure if they've changed any of that for 08. I do know the bearings are now wider down there but I'm unsure about any oil pressure changes. I'd been thinking about picking up an R6 as a track-only bike.

News to me, I know Chad had an R6 and was still going strong after a full season of riding.

Maybe these dudes are all running cheap ass oil in their bikes....

Havn't heard a word.

Anyone ever notice that some dude hears about two or three bikes over the course of a year and all of a sudden it's "all the bike" that are blowing up?

Well... my 04 started making a knocking noise at about 15k and by 23.5k it was really awful. Since it came with a 0 deductible extended warranty, thanks to the rich dude who owned it first, I took it to the shop. It was there for two freakin' months and after numerous attempts to find the problem they found a bad rod bearing. The solution was to put a salvaged 06 engine in it. Crappy workmanship everywhere I looked and it was left out in the rain so I took it all apart and checked everything. It is now back on the road looking and sounding great. But I can't help but wonder when it will go sour again. I used the bike for commuting to work 95% of the time so it wasn't like it was thrashed or anything. Regular oil changes etc. So if your bike is knocking :(

No rumors ...... its definitely an issue, but primarily for the bikes used to race. If your not sure about it ask any engine builder that works on road race R6's. It is caused by an oiling issue, One of the fixes I know of that a local engine builder is doing, is to replace the pressure valve spring in the oil pump with one from the previous generation R6. It has a stiffer spring and maintains a higher oil pressure. On some race motors he is also stepping and chamfering the oil passages through the crank.

Mine is sitting at my local dealership in pieces. It is on an extended warranty, but my dealership has not received any more info from yamaha what they are going to do with it.

The very strainge thing is.....I rode it all spring/part of summer, parked it in the garage until I could get my tires changed, and never started again. It now has not ran since early August.

I have never encountered ths problem with a yamaha. I have confidence they will fix it to how it ran before...time will tell. Im just glad riding seaaon is pretty much over, and im not calling them up everyday to see when it will be done!

Crap I have bad luck with yamaha engines my 2000 spun a rod bearing at 19,000 miles in 05 my 2006 had a valve stick/drop at less than 3000 miles. I guess i'll get the extended warranty when i buy my 08 R6 in the spring.

I have heard of this and since they use larger bearings on the 08 im thinking that its a problem.

While it doesnt effect everyone running on the track, im not really prepared to take my chances

No issues with 2500 street miles but time will tell.

go here guys!!!!

http://www.r6messagenet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141810

wera is now requiring for 2008 season all 2006 R6 to have a tank slider!!!
i've read several things on this. mostly track guy and a weak tank that cracks and leaks gas, gas hits hot motor/frame and boom, bikes on fire and you got a 10k paper weight there after!!!

on the link i posted there is a vid in the thread showing a fire at a local cali track. i was also at speedway in august (i think) and someone crashed and boom his R6 was on fire also. so i've read it and seen it with my own eyes!!!

from my understanding its just a weak tank design on the newer r6 at least 2006's not sure about 07 and 08.
