Most people shouldnt be on a motorcycle.....

Somebody make you the motorcycle pig? DOnt listen to his safety engineer lame ass. I cant stand dudes who think they are ....just over the Fukking top because they ride a bike. Its a motorcycle and your only going to twist it as much as your balls will let you, or in this dudes case , vagina.

Its not like your going to hit the wrong switch and the after burners suddenly goes off sending you into a mountain.

Dont wast your time on a lame ass 600cc motorcycle....There a Lesser bike. After you put in about 10,000 miles in the saddle and a track day or two, you will be damanding all your R1 can give you. You will be in the same boat after you put 10,000 miles in the saddle with a lesser bike.....going, what the ****....I wish I bought an R1, now I have to try and sell this piece of shit.

You will get better and better as you ride and become more at One with the One. Your balls will adjust to the power and before you know it they will allow you to do stand ups. 600 cc bikes on the road will fear you and their attitude tword you will be that of a groveling lesser bike owner. DOnt BE One OF Them.

First off my riding experiance: 1 year with and R6 and put almost 7000 miles on it last season. I am in the same boat that AllBeItMine is in. But I had a vicious tank slapper the other day and totaled my R6. I love the control and confidence that bike inspired. So I was looking to replace the 6 with a 6. The salesman was trying to talk me into a GSXR1000. I've ridden one of those and its just to POWERFUL for me. But I've been told thats all in my head.

So anyway while I was in t he bike shop, I called a buddy of mine to be the voice of reason. Surprisingly he told me the exact opposite that I expected him to say. He told me to get the R1. I replied, "But its to powerful for me..." He said, " I met you when you first got your bike and you were just like any other newbie, careful and slow, staying within your limits. But I also seen you flippin' that R6 like it was an extention of yourself. Instead of being in the back, you tryin' to hold it down in the front with the big boys leavin the others behind. If you buy that 03 R6, you might regret it buy next summer. But its up to you."

Now I didn't write that to try and build myself up but to give a little insite from one DECIENT rider to another. I've been thinking what I should do for a while... My main concern is insurance but thats another issue. But I might take an outside individule to help you decide. Someone with an unbiased opinion. I haven't decided if I'm gonna get the 1 (Its one of the most gorgeous bikes out there) yet but its between the R6 and the R1. Two completely different worlds. But hey alot of people say the R6 isn't a beginners bike, which I aggree. I still didn't listen I got the 6. And wrecked it a year later to something Yamaha's are notorious for, Headshake. Oh well, I'm not gonna dog yammie for that, just the nature of the beast, just make sure I order a damper with my next bike.

Just try to be objective and look at how you ride your current bike. Then make you decision, thats what I'm gonna do.

I agree with R1Matty. It feels more stable at double the speed limit!! You have to bring one to the track to find the true aspects of the one and then you'll appreciate the shit outta your one.

banned, away or what?

Hey R1Rookie,

You have been away for a while, what s up? away for easter? howz the r1 going?
Hope you getting a hang on it mate... FR.

i know many might concider me a rookie at "the one"

but anybody out there who wants it and thinks that it is something that they are ready to challenge, go for it.

I only rode a Honda 125 around in some training class and after that i knew i was ready for the R1. I have never riden before other than that and i took it for a 250 mile trip back to my home right after i bought it. aside from the speeding ticket i had no problems getting home.

it is fast and i have put thousands of miles on it, and after my close call i have mellowed out a bit. like all you guys have said earlier i couldn't agree with you more about how it rides smoothest atleast double the speed limit and that it all comes down to how good you can read a situation and throttle control

i still sometimes think that i should have got some better fundementals down before i got this bike but aside from all my run ins with the California highway patrol i love this thing.

Oh yeah, and F**K all you guys from my home town that kept predicting me going down!

Some here have stated it very well. The bike does NOT have a mind of its own. If you drive smootly and slowly, that's exactly what it will do. I had 10 years of experience on far smaller displacement motorcycles and the same exact rules apply......if you're stupid, you'll easily kill yourself. Doesn't matter if it's an 80cc machine or a litre bike! If you ride with your head and within your limits, you'll be just fine. Most people who get into trouble on motorcycles have the wrong mindset. Unlike PS2 and Nintendo, you don't have unlimited lives or a reset switch if you decide you're Evil Kenivel.

I had throw in my 2 cents on this subject. Hell, this is my first post to this board :)

As far as the question regarding is the bike too big or too powerful goes. Hell yeah, it is more than any sane person really needs. Will it kill you? No, only you can do that. The throttle is a little less forgiving on an R1 than it is on a 400cc bike.

Now, for those who think R1's have too much power, sorry. I am on an R1 now from a Turbo Blackbird. Sorry, the Bird with 240hp and 165lbs of torque, no extension on the swing arm is more of a suicide machine. BTW, radared @ 215mph on it.

What I will tell you though, back to the 400cc to an R1 story is similar to my going from a bird to an r1. The R1 will corner exactly like the bikes you see on the tracks. That is what will get you hurt. The ability to throw the bike into a corner at an obscene speed and pull out of it faster than you can imagine will do you in. If you wind up with the R1, just get decent tires and go through corners at speeds that you are comfortable with, not with what your friends are.

Good luck in whatever you do. Just use your head above the waist, not the one below.

Good Post Dave. Nicely put.:yesnod

Shit my buddy has been riding for years and he crashed my bike after 15 seconds!

This is my first street bike but I just have a natural feel for it so it wasn't any big deal for me. But you can get way over your head with the R1 before you even realize you! she'll accellerate allot faster then it stops! :lol

2 words to describe how you ride any litre bike.... WITH RESPECT... lol.... i jumped off a zzr250 straight onto a thunderace (pre r1 model for those that don't know it) christ was that a steep learnin curve... but i'm still alive

A reduction in engine capacity will never make up for rider stupidity.
Stupidity + 250cc = pain
Stupidity + 1000cc = pain
See same result........

like someone posted before: R1DE YOUR LIMITS!!!! and watch out for crazy drivers!!!! you should be fine...when its time to GUN it, GUN IT! use ur instincts...only you will know when to unleash its power ie: open roads with no traffic, no gravel, and plenty of beautiful scenery...I LOVE IT!
