Which Yamalube engine oil to use? 2011 R1.

Hey all,
What should I run in my 2011 R1? I don't want to bother trying to figure out which brand is "best" so would rather just go with the manufacturers brand of oil.

My question is: should go with the all purpose, semi synthetic, of full synthetic Yamalube?

Thanks much,
-John

I did my first oil change at 400 miles and decided to go with the Yamaha Performance 15W50 full synthetic.

Thanks all,
-John

You know what's really funny about that pic of the Mobile 1, I work at a Yamaha dealer in the parts dept, and we get some of that stuff from one of our distributors. We sell it for like $17/qt, which I don't agree with at all, but people still buy it. It kills me. They can run to Pep Boys down the street and pay $9.99/qt just like that.

Quick question.. $40.00 for oil/filter.. are you using car oil or motorcycle oil with filter? I was at Autozone the other day, and I thought a quart of M/C Mobil 1 was about $13 per quart unless it was on sale when you bought it..

Just wondering.. Let me know when you get a chance.
Thanks

Great choice !!

And seeing that if you use the AMSOIL filter, you can double your mileage interval, Our orice blows the doors off the $40 dollar change!

I agree with you. I've used Amsoil in the past and liked it. Personally, I tend to use Mobil 1 since I have a contact and get it very cheap. I was mostly referring to some posts that I've seen on this and other bike forums that imply that Yamalube is the worst thing you could possibly put in your engine. Like you said, there are better performing oils out there. However, there are guys here and on the FZ forum who use Yamalube and have upwards of 70,000 miles on their bikes. IMO, changing the oil and filter regularly is the simplest thing a bike owner can do to ensure long engine life.

There are oils that would never go into my bike before Yamalube unless it was an absolute emergency to get me off the road.

I used amsoil once on my R1, and it seemed to shift hard making a loud clunking sound going from 3rd to 2nd gear, i really think the dealer didnt put amsoil and instead gave me some cheap oil, switched to yamalube full syn and made a big difference, smoother shifting and lower op temps.

It definitely wasn't Amsoil then,so you actually never have used it after all. Amsoil is the best oil I have used so far, from how my bike shifts to even how it sounds even after track use. Smooth and quiet.

:banghead:

My dealer advised me against full synthetic in my friends cycle because of the clutch. I had to pick up a qt for him. An 09 R6.
Then I showed him that it was rated jaso MA and he said don't do it, go with the regular oil.

After years of running Motul 300V, I've just made the switch to Amsoil. Bike runs great on it, and it reviewed extremely well.

Brand matters less than keeping the oil clean and changed regularly though. Even so, I like to do everything I can to ensure the long life and efficient operation of my motorcycle. And there are a lot of independent studies that have rated Amsoil very well.

I believe all the motorcycle specific oils and snake oils are a waste of money. I now have 46K miles on my '99 R1 (several track days, regular Sunday back road scratching, 3000 mile adventure trips...) and have stuck to car/truck oil from Walmart/Sam's Club: Rotella T or Supertec (Walmart brand) full synthetic. Never a clutch slip nor engine problem. Well less than half the cost of motorcycle specific semi synthetics.

PS. If anyone really thinks that some salesman in his garage (e.g. Lucas) is going to formulate some snake oil that is superior to what the petrochemical giants can formulate with all their research funding, well there's some land in Florida that we need to talk about. LOL.

I try to remain professional but sometimes the right buttons are pushed.

46K on a 14 year old bike? 3300 miles per year ? I put 8K on the Yamaha, 17 K on the Wing and 43K on the Harley.. In a Year....

You can use car oil... as long as it has the proper API Specs they will meet MINIMUM Specs. Some people like more than Minimum. I like Steak over a burger and they are both beef.

You have NO IDEA what you are talking about when you call them Snake Oils. You are just following the sheep.

Lucas, made in a garage? They are not... Stupid statement!

I suppose you think AMSOIL is made in a garage as well. I will tell you it is a hell of a garage with 2.3 MILLION Gallons of storage, able to load/unload 6 Rail Tankers and 4 Semi Tankers INSIDE plus about 800,000 sq ft of blending and warehousing..... Incidently, the #1 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil in the World. (Made in a "big" garage)

AMSOIL has been honored by its Peers in the industry and voted into The Lubricant Hall of Fame. I have sat and had dinner with Execs from Mobil Chemical, Additive suppliers, Bobby Unser, Boyd Coddington and Top Racers who have a WAY different opinion than you.

Sportbike magazine doesn't seem to agree with you either... "AMSOIL performs AS Stated".. Oh wait... they must be biased.

I sell AMSOIL to Podium Teams... you must know more than they do as well.

You are entitled to your opinion no matter how wrong it is... EVERYONE is attracted to controversey, no matter what they say. After all, it got you to reply.... LOL...

I SELL to Podium teams... Not give away for Sponsorship... They pay the same price from me as you will pay... I have sent a few stickers but, I would you too if you bought oil from me.

seen an engine torn apart this weekend (a 2006 CBR1000RR motor) that had used nothing but Amsoil. Damn thing look new, and had 50k miles on it. He's doing some upgrades so he tore it completely down.

Been using Amsoil in everything for 10 years now and just reinforced what I already know.

I've seen the same with motors that never saw a drop of Amsoil. It's more about the oil change schedule than the brand of oil.

I don't doubt that Amsoil is a good product. Until I can pick it up from a local store at a reasonable price, I'll be using something else. Not to mention the obnoxious salesman.

Anyone use Repsol 4T Racing full synth'?

"Repsol 4T... Yes there are, well... were.. R-1 Race Team was using it and had to refresh each bike 2-3 times per year and now run a full season using the same AMSOIL you buy."

I was looking for an unbiased opinion. We already know what the Fuller Brush salesman thinks about a Fuller Brush, best thing since K-Y Jelly.

This is where you show just how little you know about me.

I am not politically correct, I tell you the way it is and if I find something better than what AMSOIL has, I sell it. There are several crossover products I sell instead of what AMSOIL offers. But, for engine oil, iit is second to none and the Independent tests prove it!

Incidently, I prefer a different lube than K-Y and it is not offered by AMSOIL.
