I put my deposit down at my local dealer a few weeks ago on the '12 Limited Edition. First one that comes in is mine, but no bike yet! Anyone else waiting?

I've got an SV650 track bike, but we are getting a new track as we speak @ www.nolamotor.com That mile long front straight was begging for a liter bike.....so I obliged:)

do you mean the MGP limited edition? they have one at a dealer around here on the showroom floor. they just pulled it out of the crate like 4 days ago. Its like #259 of 2000 or something like that. it has some subtle styling differences over the 09-11 but overall is the same bike. anyways, if your interested, get your deposit back and scoop it up.

Having an 09, I wouldn't jump to the 12, but if $$ isn't an issue to getting a 12 by all means go for it. Just keep in mind a reflashed 09+ ECU is better than the stock 12 ECU; and other than the paint, minor mods to the headlights/exhaust, and traction control the bikes are the same. Sounds like you'll be taking her to the track also, so that TC could benefit you. However the 09+ characteristics never needed TC in the first place.

How are you so confirmed the 09+ ecu is lesser then the 12'. I highly doubt that the case with electronics evolving and being refined so notably year to year as of late. Nuts and bolts wise the bikes are similiar but I dont know if I agree

I'd be psyched to own a 12' if I was in the market for a new R1 and unless it was a smoking deal wouldnt get an older bike. Plus new bikes are very negotiable as it remains a buyers market

I understand. The tone implied the 12' is an inferior bike. An 12' reflash to an 09' reflash I have to believe is a more evolved bike. Better at this level of bike is a relative term.

this is the main point i look at. a guy can get the 12 for 12-13 depending on dealer while you can pick up an 11 for 9500. i can do alot of modifications with that 2500-3500:fact all i would really gain would be TC which would be turned off anyway. nothing wrong with sliding the rear a bit:lol

holy bejesus. my local shop wants $14,500. MGP #255 (or so).

Yep I cant believe it. Last year they had an 2010 with Slip on and few misc mods and price is 17k I was like for what???? for 1k of mods if that. But they are something else oh i posted on their facebook page. Tampa Yamaha has the 2012 50th and price is 12999.00 which i think is fair for thebike just coming out. But they didnt respond to my post :)

Now that is ridiculous!! wtf, theyre almost giving them away around here. Yamaha sure does drink its own kool aid when it comes to anniversary bikes.

I see plenty of mark ups but thats usually at pro italia on a R model duc etc

20 large!! :lol

I don't understand how anybody can like the styling after '06.

'04-'06 gen = sexiest IMO :-D.

If you're in the Los Angeles area. North Hollywood Yamaha/Honda/Suzuki has had the MGP Anniversary as their first 2012 model bike sitting on their showroom as of late, last month October. I was surprised to see it out so soon. That place hardly moves any bikes (lots of bikes sit there for 1yr plus until they remove the junk fees and reduce asking) and then at the end of the year you can manage a great deal on anything in their showroom.

In short: You're right.

In long:
Well as far as I can tell, in terms of styling, the '04-'06 & the '07/'08 are pretty close, too close that I can say I like one over the other. In '09 they rather radically changed. I had previously thought this change occurred in '07, but was wrong.

So yes, the BEST R1 FOR ME would be an '08, the latest tech in the last year of the styling I like. Perhaps at a later point if I decide to go with another R1 or sell this one, I'd aim to get an '08. Though TBH, when buying used, aiming at a range of years (ie. aiming for an '04-'08) is MUCH easier than aiming at one particular year (ie. '08).

Besides, I can't push the '04 R1 to it's maximum, how much of a difference will the new tech (presumably to make it quicker and better handling) make the '08 for somebody like me? Not like I'll have quicker track times with it, lmao. I'll probably have quicker track times with an R6 due to my skill level, haha.

I prefer the 04-06, then next the 07-08 especially in styling/design. I wasn't impressed riding a friend's Yamaha factory loaner 07 for a few hours when they first came out, but then again stock is so far behind any modified R1. The 04-06 were the lightest ~ 379 lbs dry weight and relatively the strongest engines in the series once you match the gearing properly. I felt my 98 R1s had better low/mid with stock gearing. If any newer R1 were more compelling to buy, I'd have one! I do love the big bang sound of the 09+, but not enamored with the added weight/size compared to the competition. I hope Yamaha makes a huge stride in 2013-2014 in the veins of the BMW S1000RR or makes a limited LE much like the 06 with higher end components. Bring some sexiness into the model like the Aprilia RSV4 Factory APRC or Duc 1199 Panigale S!

I love every year that Yamaha made the R1. I had every year R1 after 2002 and each one of them was different then the other but over all i think they are just getting better and better. At first i didnt like the 09+ but after some research and time and people that have them that bike is amazing with some mods that bike will fly.

If you are a true Yamaha fan you will love every year they were made :) Just my opinion.

The only thing that bothers me is weight because i weigh 255 so what ever r1 i get its gonna be really slow unless i do mods on it. If i had to throw 10k plus i would buy new r1 asap but i dont so i stick to 04-08.

But when we talk price 15k plus the only thing that comes to my mind in that price range would be Aprilia Rsv4, s1000rr, ducati 1098s or that new 1199.

I have a buddy has the 09 bone stock and my 08 is modified but he keeps up i would assume if he did some mods to his it would be a diff story he does weigh 100 pounds less :)

It's called evolution amidst competition. The 98 R1s hp/tq throughout the rev range were superior to many of the later generation R1s in the low/mid stock but much more of a handful, but would you pay $12K for a 98 R1 vs what's on the 2012 market today? BNG to save a model year is also a marketing ploy to advance sales without major expenditures. R1s have gained bigger PEAK HP inline 4s create more power/tq by pushing the upper RPM range to make that power while giving up down low. That's the trend these past few years. Racebikes tuned/geared for the track make poor performing streetbikes, but now superbikes are gaining electronics to make the bikes much more user friendly street or track. Anyways, like I said before there are appealing merits to any generation R1 and unlike a friend of mine that does own every generation R1 since 1998 to 2011 even multiple LEs/colors, it's really interesting seeing them all lined up side by side to see the direction Yamaha took in design and styling.

Shop called me today to say it was in....with the holidays and my work schedule it looks like it'll be Tuesday before I can go try to finalize the deal/pick it up. The also have a '10 Rossi on the floor, so if they won't make me a decent deal on the '12 I should be able to pick up the '10 for cheap. We shall see.....
