Woke up early this morning to gas the cage (get more gas for your money when it's cooler) and a guy with a 05 Gixxer 750 rolls up to gas too.

So i strike a conversation with my fellow rider and he asked what i ride and i proudly answered "Well one of my bikes is a 03 R1". This guy looked like  and said "you ride a Yamaha....why you ride a Yamaha... nobody rides yamaha's...they're not that great".

So i immedaity got on the defensive and said" well mine and the newer models look better and perform better than your cyclops". Next he said " what you mean by cyclops" then i pointed to his headlight:riding . Now he was pissed and said " your 'YAMAHA' couldn't keep up with me". i'm like  "dude you're on a 750 don't bit off more than you can chew" so i gave him my number and told him call me tonite at 10 so i can :fire ya.

Now for the funny part. As we both bout to leave some Squid rolls up on a FZ 1, revving as he pulling up to the pump and stalls the bike short of the pump and than can't start the damn thing again the guy on the gixxer looks at me and shakes his head and then wheelies off.

This is not the first time i told someone i ride a R1 or when i'm riding, they look at me funny and ask why yamaha. It like no one likes yamaha around here or even owns one what fook is up?

Most real riders don't give a damn what you are on, they have interest in the sport. Then again, with the popularity of sportbikes, you are less likley to run into a real rider.

:iamwithst .......Well said ! :beer Bikes are not for egos, just tools for a sport !:riding If I had the :dollar I'd have a bunch of bikes ,Honda,Kawi,Suzuki,Yamamama,Duck,Aprilia,KTM,MV.......it's the ride not the machine.......just have fun ! :thumbup

I have ridden motorcycles for many years and own over twenty right now in various stages of condition.I have had the same reaction from friends at work over my decision to buy a 04 R1 over others.Obviously, I do alot of my own maintenance and have always found yamaha the hardest of the bunch to work on.Maybe I should say a suzuki is the easiest to work on instead.Or the fact that most yamaha fasteners and the like are tricky unless your familiar with them. That said I believe most naysayers of yamaha have owned or known someone who has owned one that was always (tore up)simply because of their ignorance in this matter..

Thats true I do notice alot more suzukis on the road, especially in the last year or so. But thats where the beauty, power, handling and uniqueness of the ONE really become apparent. IMO Yamaha makes the best all around bikes :fork :fact

when he didnt understand the comment about the cyclops, you should have asked him what day last week he got the bike because my 7 yr old daughter know what cyclops in the bike world means!:no

get that alot here in jersey too. It seems like alot (well everyone) sports a gixxer around here. When i roll up to the mountains, gixxer owners stare at me like they already own me. That is part of the reason why i went with the R1. Its "different" i guess. All bikes are nice, release stress, gives freedom, and even humbles the average biker. Wish alot of people would leave their egos at home and just enjoy the ride.

I've neve come across this:dunno

Must be an American thing
It is largely an American "thing". In the UK, I never experience any negative behaviour from fellow riders or cagers for that matter. Everyone seems to just enjoy riding and mind their own.

In the US, I have cagers try to run me bike off the road and other riders try to race at every red light.

Let's just say I was in the market for a bike for many years... and every year, I kept seeing the R1 and saying, "Damn. That's ONE sexy beast." Every time I saw a Gixxer (my brother owns one) and a kawasaki, I kept thinking, "Yeah... nice. But it just doesn't move me or inspire me."

Hondas are all around nice, but they are like Honda cars. Made for everyone with nothing that really stands out and evokes emotion.

Yamahas, especially the first R1, have always had a bad ass look, a sexy styling, and something that underneath it all, tells the rider, "I know EXACTLY what you're looking for."

For the price, the styling, and the killer instinct, Yamahas stand alone. Suzukis are everywhere, hondas too, but that Yamaha, cruising past you on the other side of the highway..... it is instantly recognizable and everyone knows it.

The second I saw the 04 R1 I Knew. I knew it was time to buy. I knew I was looking at the sexiest and baddest bike ever made by Japan.

Those are my 2¢

i'll definitely let you guys know how it goes.

I wouldn't even say it's an American thing. I think people do whatever their friends do. So if you're looking for a bike and you know a few guys that ride gixxers, odds are they're going to talk you into a gixxer. You hear them talk sh*t on Yamahas, you're going to talk sh*t on Yamahas. Not because you even know anything about them, just because that's what your buddies do. It's a clique thing. I'm sure out there somewhere, there's a bunch of posers on Yamaha's talking the same trash to guys on Suzukis.
