I will be converting my '02 exaust to the awesome looking stock exhaust of the 04-05 R1. I will also gut the cans and use rece baffles on them, but for now fit ment is on the drawing board.
I've got the cat to cans from an 05 r1 already. have 5 monthsto do this, i will be patient.
as always any feed back is welcome. I know I could have gone with ixil underseats or wolf or dynomite, but I preffer the looks of the stock exaust for this.

why not do a tail swap as well?

i dont think the stock 04 cans would look good unless they are integrated in the tail like the 04's..

Depending on how they look and if I like them I will inergrde them myself, all it takes is just a sawsall and fiberglas resin, I've made several fiberglas prototype designs for my previous cars. depend on how I feel at the time, right now I'm going to work on the actual fitment and mount.

Incorrect my friend it is not impossible, there may be welding and fab involved but so far so good as far as my research is going. will not be using the stock 04-05 cat (or y pipe if you will)...Also I will shorten the stock cans in order to use a splayed stainless steel y pipe that is not pointed down into the swing arm. I will go with a sinlge midpipe design from 304 stainless steel tubing with proper bends which I will then powder coat. T-bolt flat band clamps will be used rather than U-bolt muffler clamps.

I'm also working on a single oval can, and just got 10ft off perforated baffle piping for my cores.

If this project flyes as far as my interest in making more, and if there is interest I will sell a kit, not sure though, have to have the actual prototype design made.

Yes, it's mostly trial and error with this, but hey if the bike is going to be sitting while it snows in MA, then I might as well use my time wisely. any other weld and fab guys ever think of doing this?

what about the WOLF undertail exhaust? it goes around the swingarm and has the exhaust cans that stick out of the bottom of the tail unlike the Ixil setup.. lemme see if i can find a pic..

sorry.. i was just reading your original post and i didnt realize that you mentioned you already looked into those other exhausts..

there was a thread where somebody did a complete tail conversion on their 02 with a 04 subframe, tail p[lastic and exhaust.. it looked badass.. it was complete with a how to also.. but i searched for like the last 35 minutes and couldnt find it..

if i come across it, i will deffinatly post it up for you..

I've been wanting to do it on my 02. I just have to find someone to make the pipe since I'm not a welder. I've seen the 03 with the 04 tail but not the exhuast. I think we have to shorten the exhaust but I haven't started on the design yet. Do they get really hot? Do wee need something to protect the tail?

I've seen a few Hotbodies systems, and they all sucked. The pipe coming up the backside of the rearset is way too close to your foot, and the whole set-up just seems kinda poorly engineered.

Just my opinion.

I'll post soem pics soon, thinking of using 1 of the cans shortened instead of 2, to give it a more stealth look. as to the cost, it was free from my buddy in costarica, just payed shipping.

i deffinatly agree.. the three ppl around here that have them, the entire undertail part away from the tail light melts and looks wierd cause it sags...

yep bro. im startin work on the same project........ im startin w/ a 2000 R1 and just buildin complete custom exhaust......i have a complete race shop so i have benders and tig welders........ its gonna be interesting.....you doin the dual cans or a single can? single tube in front of the swingarm might work w/ a y pipe just above the swingarm w/ both cans mounted to the frame under the seat......prolly gonna wanna install some thermotec heat shielding to deflect the heat away from the plastic and maybe send pipes to get em jet hot coated seeing as how they have a chrome process now......if ya wanna compare notes sometime gimme a call. 414.353.5087

I'm thiinking of doing both slip on duals and single, easier to do the sinlge shortened race baffled stock 04-05 can with custom fab tip fits better. Or I can make my short skinny can'slike (wolf) makes and go with that as a set of twins for the back with optional slip on single when I want to. all in the eye of the beholder, lets talk, I'd like to make sum $ when this is done.
