No to the Ducati, and I doubt it to ouriding ya! But... maybe. I'm going to LOOK at Ducati's this weekend. Today as a matter of fact. Expensive to buy, expensive to own. So I don't know yet... After reading ALOT of the posts on here the R-1 is holding more and more appeal. Winter is coming soon and I want to get out before it snows and get a chance to ride. Preferably up to the northeast, around Vermont and Maine.

I doubt I would be ever trying to mess with one myself either. You being a mechanic and not wanting to touch one kinda says alot, but your friend being a tech for Ducati and getting scared to mess with them says plenty! I can do minor car repairs and thats about it! But being a systems analyst.... I can fix a computer up pretty well!

Now those I haven't seen alot of over here in the States. Why, I don't know. It was a REALLY nice bike though. That I liked riding alot.

I think I will. I learn pretty fast. Right now I am kind of a "time crunch." I want to buy a bike before it gets too cold to ride it, even if its only once or twice. I've been thinking of going and getting used, maybe a 2000. There lies another question.... where to look? And is that really the best idea for someone like me?
I'm trying not to let the impatience of buying a bike quickly get in the way of being somewhat logical. Fact is, I want new. But do most people keep up their R-1's like the members on here? If so, then I could go used and find a really sweet bike.
Is the net honestly a good place to look if I looked regionally? Or is it better to avoid that?

If I was you and wanted an R1 I would wait and buy a new 2002. I'm always a little funny about buying used things, espicially sport bikes because I know how people ride them. I'm religious about keeping my bike clean and taking care of it. I know I am not the majority but there are others out there like me. Often people like me will keep there bikes for the long run. Get the 2002, the FI will be awesome. You'll be happy you did. Trust me, if I could hold out and wait you can. I have no patience at all!

Sorry could not resist. Really the only way to learn is ask,hide and watch the only stupid question is the question not asked. Now as far as buying a new R1 no disrespect to Ltd R1 but I NEVER buy a first year bike just for the simple reason of they always release them with bugs(kinda like windows) if you look back at the 98 R1 and all the recalls it had...man ugly,but they are still killer bikes. You can pick up a 2001 cheap after the 2002 is released because everyone has to have the new stuff. OK no one needs to flame on me this is just an opinion and does not represent the R1 forum or any of its affiliates

What I got from both of you is that the best thing is to WAIT until after the 2002's are released. And then go from there. What I will most like do is end up buying a 2001. The reason is... until I am a very experienced rider, the investment of a 2002 seems fairly large. Although the 2002's are going to be SOOOOOO nice and to say the draw of wanting to buy one is not there would be a lie. This is whats so nice for me. I can ask a question on here and get a honest opinion. When I do it at a dealer I get a sales pitch. Which is natural, of course. They want to sell a bike!
