Might be cheaper to break it open and rebuild it?

I rebuilt my '06 last year and it was definitely the cheapest way to go. Hell, I even had to replace all the bearings and the crankshaft. What kind of damage did it do?

I personally have no engine building experience but I am currently in the process of rebuilding the motor for my 06 Kawasaki 636. With the service manual and my dad and some friends a phone call away has turned what I thought into a smooth process. I thought it would be easier to just get a new motor but limited parts out there in the good condition that I am looking for. If you have the time and some patience to wait on doing it right and getting the parts you need, better to just rebuild and replace what you need. The higher end parts like the head and jug can be found for low cost if you do your research and look at all options.
