BMW CRT 4 CE II
by staff
Thursday, October 20, 2011

Colin Edwards II confirmed Thursday at Sepang that he will ride a Suter/BMW combination for CRT team Forward Racing next season in MotoGP.

It's not the ideal scenario for the Texan. When Edwards announced last month he was leaving Tech 3 Yamaha for a 1000cc CRT team, he hoped to convince Yamaha to provide an R1 engine in a chassis built by his current Tech 3 crew chief, Guy Coulon.

That plan fell through, as did a backup plan to put a Yamaha R1 engine in a Moriwaki chassis. Yamaha Europe squelched any engine supply to the Italian-based Forward team despite Edwards riding in MotoGP for either a Yamaha factory or satellite team since 2005.

Edwards minced few words - as usual - about being jilted by Yamaha, especially the manufacturer's European arm, telling reporters that several people in Yamaha Europe "didn't give a sh*t what I thought" and predicting that while the Suter/BMW effort will be a hard slog, he's up for it.

It's just over two weeks until the 1000cc MotoGP bikes will take to the track at Valencia in the first post/pre-season test.
I don't get it, Yamaha europe spits in the face of one of the most popular racers in the world. Why? I can't see why they wouldn't do it. It's an awesome venture! They pull out of superbike, and here's where they could put their support.

I'm sorry for going a little OT and must admit i don't know much about the new regulations in 2012 1000cc MotoGP but will they really be allowed to use an entire engine from YZF R1 in MotoGP now??

With the old regulations there where certain parts that had to be prototype stuff(?)

What's funny is when I was at his camp last month I asked him if he'd thought of going bask to WSBK. He said BMW offered him a shit-ton-o-money to ride for them. He said he turned them down because he didn't think the BMW could be competitive in WSBK and needed alot more development. He was counting on Forward running a Yamaha motor with a Tech3, Moriwaki or FTR chassis. This totally blows that Yamaha shut them down on a R1 WSBK motor. I'd think it would be a great marketing coup for Yamaha to show the world how competitive the x-plane production engine can be. Race on Sunday...sell on Monday. Can't happen now.

Read this on MotoGP.com:
http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2011/edwards+to+bmw+suter+for+2012

“At the beginning I just said we’d run a Yamaha engine and a Tech 3 chassis because that was my way of putting some pressure on some guys, and they obviously didn’t care what I thought because they said no!" joked Edwards.

“It will be a BMW/Suter which is what I signed for in the beginning, and I’m happy to be working with those guys,” he continued. “We’ll have to go out there and work and test. It’s probably not going to be competitive in the first race, maybe not in the last race, but we’ll work extremely hard to build it.”

Sounds like it was never going to happen and Yamaha just shot that idea down completely.

Jason, he knows well the engines Aprilia makes.... Remember the cube? the thing had too much HP for the chassis. he even said sometimes he was lucky to keep it on the track bc it had so much HP. he is a great test and develop rider and while it sucks to see him dropped like that he will do well no matter the circumstances.
