Good evening everyone, first time am in a forum, I decide to start one because I can't find the problem to my bike.
I bought the bike couple months ago when i bought it from my friend, it had bad starter motor, I changed the starter motor and the bike was starting great until now.
(I have a Yamaha r1 2005 with 13k miles)
So this are the sintoms:
- I try to turn it in and it try's but it doesn't like the starter engine spins but it needs like a little bit more, so if I keep doing it my battery dies

I have to push started to turn it on the first time because it's not stating with the starter, so I let it warm up I drive it around the block and I turn it off let 1 minute pass and I used the starter and it turns great right away like so I turn it of again I let 5 minutes pass turn it on with the started and the bikes turns on fast and strong, so I turn it off again let it cooled down like 20 to 30 minutes and try to turn it on and here we go the same f** problem I check the battery to see if it was loosing power or getting cold or something and nothing battery is great, i don't know what to do.

So the engine starter I changed 3 months ago.
The battery is new
What could it be ? Did the starter broke again ? What is making it break ? Could it be the altenator that's not charging the battery? Could it the spark plugs ? they haven't been change for more then a year
Thankyou for your time

Remember the bike turns great when is hot but when I let it cool down forget it it sound like is going to start but it doesn't.

Thanks again

The last owner, never start the bike during winter so when I went to see it on April, we try to turn it on and look like the battery was dead, he made a huge mistake plugging jumper cable from his truck to the bike to turn it on, it did but when he turn it of and back on it didn't same problem o have now so weird, probably had the same problem that's why he sold it but am trying to get it fix, so I bought it from him I took it to a mechanic he rebuild the started, and a month after the started was broken, so I decided to buy a used started not to rebuilders anymore, I install the one myself, and bike run good all summer until last week same problem but how I said when is warm turn back on strong.
Thanks

Unfortunately it sounds like the used starter went bad too. It starts easier (normally) once warmed, because the battery just got charged up, and has higher voltage and amps to turn the starter. After sitting that 'extra' voltage/amps drop off, when my '06's starter was going bad I would put it on a Battery Tender for about a 1/2 hr. - 1 hr. to bring the battery up to a 100% full charge and it would start right up every time when cold (for awhile). It couldn't hurt to replace the starter relay/solenoid, as this is what transfers the power to the starter, it could be losing some amps /voltage at the contact points within the relay/solenoid. To make it easier to find......'04-'08 R1 starters will work, as I currently have an '07 starter in my '06. I would recommend getting a Battery Tender if you don't have one, these R1's really like a fully charged battery. A fully charged battery should be easier on the charging system as well, and a lot of these bikes also have experienced some stator rotor issues, where the magnets come loose in the rotor, and destroy the stator as well. And its not a cheap or pleasant repair either. Yamaha does make an updated rotor that can't lose the magnets, its also about $300-$350 just for the rotor ! Keep that battery charged !

Thankyou for answering

I have a battery tender I plug the bike everynight to the battery tender

It's very weird because how I said is like sometimes when ever it wants turns on after being warm, am going to change the solenoid how you said it could be that but the wierd thing is the how come it works when is warm perfectly, can the spark plugs have something to do ?

Thankyou

If the bike is cranking slowly its not the plugs. The starter is the most likely cause of your problem, the relay/solenoid is a possibility but not as likely, but its easy and cheap enough to replace with a new one so you know its good.

Try disconnecting and re-connecting the Battery Tender 20 min. to a 1/2 hr. before attempting a start, so that the green light is flashing again, attempt the cold start after the light stops flashing. This won't 'solve' anything, but might make it easier to start until its fixed.

Good evening every one

So today I try what you guys told me about the battery tender and no it didn't turn on it try but it doesn't, so I changed the spark plugs the old ones were really dark and old, so it didn't start with new sparks either, so o plug the voltage thing to the battery to see how much voltage did it have, and it has 12.80V but when i hit the start the battery drops to 5V it drops a lot but it doesn't turn on, so I took the battery to my friends house the he has a cbr1000 try his battery with the tester and his battery is 12.80V when I hit the starter it drops to 9.50V it of course turns on, so I put my battery to his bike to see if it was going to drop to 5V like it drops in mine and no it doesn't it turns great with my battery, so what is sucking my battery in my bike ? Why does it drop to 5V right away is it the alternator or he starter engine again, some people tell me the regulator, I know you guys told me the starter but am just trying to figure if is something else

Thanks a lot for reading and answerin and your patience

The best way to do this is to start with the easiest things first. If you believe that your starter is bad, remove it and take it to autozone or advanced auto. They can check it and tell you if you need a new one. They dont sell them there but it is a quick way to find out. Having it tested is better than shelling out the $450. it cost for a new one when when that might not have even been the problem. Based on your comments using your battery and checking the voltage on both his and your bike, I think it is safe to assume that your voltage regulator may be a problem. You can always push start a bike with a faulty regulator but not always while the bike is just sitting. I helped a buddy with his triumph as he was having pretty much the same issues. We replaced his voltage regulator and it fired right up. I hope that helps.

Sounds like your bike is pulling from the battery only. More than likely your Generator (magneto) is bad. Like stated in an earlier response, there is an updated magneto where the magnets cant come lose. Sounds like its something in your charging system for sure and that's coming from someone who just had to replace the magneto on my 06 R1. If you can get the bike started by roll starting it, you can put a multi-meter to the battery and it should be ready around 14.00. Rev the bike up to about 5000rpms and if the voltage drops dramatically then your stator or magneto is the problem.
