Someone i know through a friend is gonna sell me his 01 R1 for 4k. He has 14k miles and don't ride it anymore because of a car accident. The bike is clean with no damages. The only thing I'm concerned is that it's carb. My last bike was a 05 zx6r so I've never felt with a carb bike. I live in Georgia so it does get cold here and I'm only gonna ride for summer and fall while it's still hot. I know the 02s and up are fuel injected.

My question is should i take this deal on the 01 or try my luck finding a fuel injected r1?

What makes the carbs easier to handle? Sure fuel injected gives you better throttle response, but how is its more powerful?

The injected is more powerful simply because it is... it makes 20-25bhp more on an 05 than an 01.

The carbs being 'easier' .... well easier isn't the word for me 'nicer' is the word i'd use. The carbs you can be more gradual with the power, you can hold a throttle mid corner better, the FI, well it's like 'on-off' ... not really a 'sort of on'.... Hence for me anyway, you can dial in the power when you need more gradually.

You also can get a bit of throttle response at times when you don't want it with FI bikes, over a bump, pothole etc, the bike bucks and heaves if you end up moving you hand just a fraction of a mm..with the carbs you don't get the unwanted responses.

That's my take on it... However, like everything in life, opinions vary.

I'm in the fortunate position that i can jump on either any day of the week... i NEVER jump on the 05 unless one of my mates is borrowing the 01's and i have no other option.

I also own (2) carb'd R1s and swear by them.

Weeksy covered the bulk of the differences, but what I will tell you is that the power delivery and suspension on the 98-01s are unforgiving. Not recommended for beginners.

Also I would say the suspension is pretty tired on the carb'd bikes. My recommendation is if you get an 98-01 R1, update the suspension and brakes to those of an 04+ R1.

In the end it's your decision; do what you are comfortable with. Good luck. :)

My 2000 is awesome. It has a bunch of low and mid torque that newer R1s dont have with the exception of 09+ bikes.

I prefer the gen 1 to my friends 04. Better mannered in city driving, ie better leaving stop signs and lights. The trade-off, of course, the newer bikes have more top end. for 4K, if it is clean and well maintained, I'd give it the nod.

As i have ridden the 04 and 07 R1's in the last couple of days and i own a 99 model.i can honestly say that i realy couldnt say that carbed bike is a lesser bike.as long as the carbs are set up well, you would have to be a very very good rider to pick holes in the way a well set up carbed r1 performes.seeing as the bike you're looking at is low milage, very clean and a good price, its a very easy answer....GET IT BOUGHT.
