When will we start hearing specs or rumors
about it?

2006 R1.....................

M1 bodywork like Rossi's race bike with ram air duct under the lights.

185 claimed BHP but about 5 BHP more than the Gixxer.

Big bang motor like the one tested by Virgin Yamaha earlier this year.

Better suspension with Hi and Low speed damping adjustment.

Gas charged front forks as used in GP's and Superbikes for the last 3 years.

Carbon body work as standard.

Forged Magnesium wheels.

I HOPE !!!!!!!!!!

Must's:
- More power: more HP & torque, w/ a linear torque spread across the rev range (ie. no "dips").
- Lighter weight.
- Slipper clutch.
- Improved tail/exhaust design for better heat dissipation/management.
- Ignition key security chip (Already offered in Europe. Can't understand why it isn't also standard in N. America)

Possible's:
- Entire chassis (incl. main frame) is CF cast.
- Friction-reducing fork tube coating (DLC, TiN) - a long overdue feature.
- Wave rotors.
- LED gear position indicator incl. in the instrument cluster (This one should probably be a "must").
- Single can exhaust (less weight & potential midrange improvement).
- Turn signals integrated into bodywork, mirrors.

I hope NOT, as I want to ride that bike longer than just one season...!

Apart from that, you couldn't pay this 2006 R1... but if it was a 2006 M1 Replica, the price tag would not matter so much.
Whats wrong with mag's, how could they not last more than a season

Magnesium wheels are a mixed bag where durability is concerned. Generally, they're not up to the long-term rigors of the street. I've seen pitcures of mag wheels that had their spokes shredded from an impact that an Al wheel could've survived. The jury' still out on CF wheels, as it seems that the DOT is reluctant to even rate them. I've seen magnesium & CF wheels on street bikes, so, yes, it can be done. However, I'd personally put more confidence in aluminum, as it can better handle the heavy, concussive impacts that your avg. street will serve up a bit better than magnesium.

As always, YMMV.

Hopefully, by mid September we should know something. I'd like to see a slipper clutch and a gear indicator at least. Oh, a cup holder would be nice too!!!

Magnesium is much more brittle than aluminum, definately not an item for everyday street use.
I second the suspension upgrades. The legs definatley could use a low friction coating. I keep asking the Yamaha reps about the frame getting CF, they aren't spilling the beans... yet. One thing is for cetain, there will be some changes as long as Suzuki and Kawasaki keep upping the ante.

Actually, I heard that in an effort to gain fuel economy due to rising gas prices, Yamaha is equipping the 06 R1 with a twin cylinder diesel engine. The pipes - it will have two - will be carbon fiber but go straight up beside the rider like on an eighteen wheeler. The R1 will still out run the Gixxxer, don't worry, it will just have to do so between 3 gas stations, since the R1 will not have to stop and the Gixxer will have to drink up three times!
