This thread is long overdue. But, at the same time, I didn't want to write it until I was able to get to the point of getting closer to her being track worthy again due to many unforeseen and unfortunate events in my life. Now, it's starting to become a reality that she'll be on the track this year. :rock

This R1 was originally owned by gawarrior. Chad was a great guy, very active on the forum, and an accomplished rider/racer. Very well liked. Sadly, he passed away far too early in life on June 25th, 2008. :(

His family and friends raffled the R1 to help pay for expenses. I had the winning ticket, and scheduled a trip to go down and pick up the bike in early August '09. While down there, went motocross riding with plimmer, then drove up and met SpidermanSS when he was living in Pikeville, KY. :thumbup

Here is what she looked like when I picked her up:

After getting home, I did some quick maintenance work and proceeded to get back on the track a couple of weeks later. This was my first time back on an R1, since '06 when I sold my '03 to purchase a YZ250F so my son could learn to ride. I had been riding/racing motocross, racing harescrambles and did a couple of trackdays at a smaller track riding SuMo on my '07 YZ450F. So, it wasn't as if I had been off a bike that whole time. But, I was rusty from not having ridden for a sportbike for a while...

I did a couple of trackdays the remainder of the '09 season, and it was great to finally be back out there!

The following year, I did a few trackdays. A couple of times at DCTC, our smaller local track for skills based riding.

After that trackday, I had decided to park the R1 for the remainder of the season so I could do some heavy maintenance. One of the frame sliders had decided to come loose, it needed a thorough going through, as well as some other things. Unfortunately, it seemed life had different plans for me, as that would be the last time I rode her.

In September 2010, I was involved in a head on collision that totaled my E250 van. The other driver swerved in front me of because she almost missed her turn due to texting and driving. My neck was messed up for a while, and it was over a year before I could ride my YZ450F due to how the helmet bounced around, even with a Leatt neck brace. Along with the accident, I was facing financial ruin due to a number of issues outside my control.

From there, life really went to hell. The following year, my wife decided she wanted a separation. Then came a divorce (the judge signed the divorce decree on our 20th anniversary, happy anniversary b*tch! :lol ), followed by even further financial ruin and eventually loss of house through short sale, and finally having to euthanize my dog due to health issues.

During that time, I wound up having to sell of nearly all the parts I had bought to restore the R1 back to track worthiness, along with all my gear. I sold the other three bikes I had (2007 YZ450F, 2005 YZ250F, 2005 TT-r125LE), and even attempted to sell the R1 a couple of times. Looking back, thankfully it didn't go through!

At the end of 2012, I was working to get the R1 operational as it had sat for a couple of years. The wiring harness was trashed. Someone had yanked the PowerCommander, or Bazaaz from it's connections and ruined the harness, so I bought a used one and attempted to replace it. The bike would fire, but not run. So, I found a reputable repair shop, operated by a guy whom races, to check it out and get it running.

It turned out to be a connector that I missed, and the bike ran. But, it wasn't running right. Cylinder #4 was running quite a bit cooler than the others, based upon temp readings of the header. I had him dig into it a little, and it turned out #4 had zero compression, with 100% blow-by into the crank on a leakdown test. Not having the money for the repair, I picked it up and brought it home.

A couple months later, I managed to get the money for the repair, and brought I back in to have it taken care of. A time estimate of “a month or so” turned into a little over a year of frustration and hell. If I would have had hair, I certainly wouldn't have it now. :lol

Her finally back together, and on the dyno:

Skipping all the messy details, I finally was able to pick up the R1 approximately fourteen months after it went into the shop to have the engine rebuilt. :shake Because I didn't have a place to work on it, she had to go into storage for a couple of months until I moved to where I am now that has a garage.

It's been less than a month since moving, and I still have a lot of things left to unpack. But, I've been working on the bike as I'm able to. My goal was June 1st to be back on track. But, I'm not going to make it with too much happening. So, I'll have to readjust my timeline some.

Image

Since I sold all my gear, I had to replace it. So, I took the opportunity to get a custom made one piece suit from Arsenal Leather works, Alpinestars GP Tech gloves and Supertech boots, as well as a Forcefield Pro4 back protector. But, all that has to wait now until I can finish getting her track ready...

So, this is where I'm at currently, after having worked on her last night some more...

This is what was done before I picked her up in 2009:
Engine rebuilt
APE cam chain tensioner
Traxxion AK20 fork kit
Penske 8900 series triple clicker shock
Woodcraft rearsets
Graves frame sliders
SS front lines
Catalyst Composites race plastics
Catalytic converter punched, A&R race baffles installed
DID 50 chain, Vortex sprockets

Here is what I've done since I got it, most of it having been done this year:
Engine rebuild
ECU re-flashed by SBU (30% increased engine braking, rev limiter adjusted, O2 disabled, fans adjusted for better cooling)
M4 stainless steel midpipe (oxygen sensor hole plugged with SS plug)
OEM cans and race baffles shortened by 1.5”
Power Commander III-USB with custom map
Graves AIS block-off plates
YEC quick turn throttle
Graves race fairing stay and plugs
Motovation clutch/stator sliders
Motovation frame sliders
Woodcraft swingarm spool sliders
Woodcraft case covers
Galfter SS braided front lines
SBS brake pads
CRG Billet Black levers
Radiator cap (1.8 bar)
Pro-Bolt clutch cable adjuster (blue)
Rizoma oil fill cap
Keyless gas gap
Trimmed wiring harness to remove headlight connections

There's been a few other things I've done such as replacing missing cooling fans, suspension service, and replacing worn rearset pegs. But, those are the key things I've done so far.

I still have a ways to go with things to do yet:
Ohlins steering damper
Driven clip-ons
Woodcraft bar end sliders
New chain and sprockets
Galfer SS braided rear line
Graves rear brake return spring
Replace front and rear wheel bearings
Replace steering stem bearings
and a few other bits and customizations... :sneaky:sneaky

But, for those whom have wondered, she's still around and will be making a comeback. This year is getting her mechanically sound. Over the winter, my plans are to put new plastics on and a nice livery.

Its cool to see how you've gone trough this and are back on the horse. you deff made the right choice of boots thats for sure. mine kept my ankle nice and attached during my lowside XD.had I worn just casual ridding boots im positive my foot would not have ended up where the rest of my body did.

Do you know what brand of fairings are on the bike. Do you find it to be of good quality? im looking to get a set for my bike since ive decided that I will no longer street the r1

#4 ·
Thanks. :thumbup

The plastics are Catalyst Composites. They seem to fit okay. I haven't done much with them as they came with the bike. I am planning to replace them with Armour Bodies or Sharkskinz next winter.

Good to see the progress, and the future plans :flex:
thanks, Dan. Hoping to be at a trackday with you yet this season.

Sorry for your troubles but sounds like you have turned it all around. :jump:jump:jump
Ouch! Right when I am feeling sorry for myself because my darn shock swap plans didn't work out, a post like this really puts it in perspective. Glad things seem to be turning around for you and I hope you get that track day soon!
Thanks Winks, Fogo and Rich. Just goes to show that no matter how bad we think we have it, there's always someone out there to show us it really isn't all that. I can honestly say that's happened to me within the past year a couple of times.

Get on with it FFS :2bitchsla

Glad to see there is light at the end of the tunnel. :thumbup
:dunno I worked on it for a while this weekend. Installed a few parts, found some more things I need to fix/replace. Hopefully I can repair one, otherwise I might not make it on the track if I have to spend the money to replace..

Let me know what your schedule is like. I'm still looking at a very limited schedule for track days, and I want to get at least one CCS race weekend in this year. May just have to sell a kidney to do it though. :lol
:thumbup Will do. I was hoping for June 1 to be on track. But, it's looking more like July 1. But, will keep you posted as to what I do.

You should post up what you need. I likely don't have it, because I have an 04 and I have only been replacing cosmetics for the most part, but I bet there are dozens of members that have stuff they consider junk (or spares of spares) laying around.

#16 ·
Thanks. She came off the pasture, and is getting prepped for duty again. :thumbup

Something tells me, I should be saying the same thing about me too. :crash

#20 ·
Who rebuilt the motor? Dare I ask lol?

#21 ·
I'm not sure who did it before I got the bike. But, it was someone in Atlanta. Initially, was thinking it might have been an install problem with the pistons that was causing them to seize inside, as the bike only had under twenty hours before I had to have it rebuilt. But, after discussing it with DanQ and others, came to consensus that it was most likely from sitting in a humid garage for a few years.

As to whom did the rebuild for me, it was 2K Motorsports. I'm not going to get into any details in this thread as I don't want to go down that path here. There's a few people whom know some of what happened, and I've discussed some of it elsewhere on the forum.

Got a little farther along..

Reinstalled the tank, missing side panels, as well as one of the missing cooling fans. I'm thinking either the radiator is slightly bent. Or, it's a different year as the right side cooling fan doesn't fit properly. One should be sufficient for trackdays. :dunno

Also, replacing chain and sprockets. Going from a -1/+1 to -1/+2 for better drive out of corners. Then, removed the oxygen sensor, installing a plug since the O2 is disabled. Did a few other odds 'n ends on it, including a trip to the hardware store for SS bolts/screws.

fjorn, great story. Thats great that you got to keep this bike and continue the legacy, im sure Chad would of wanted that.

Im a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Im sorry about your woe's but I am happy that you are headed in the right direction and still have a positive outlook on all of this!!!

BTW the bike looks great, I can tell she is smiling..:D

#26 ·
Thanks, Ruben. I'm looking forward to getting her back on the track! :thumbup

What fan isn't fitting ? Have any pics of the problem? I can try and take pics of mine if that helps.
it'the right side cooling fan. I'll take pics this weekend if I have time. I have to work most of this weekend, so time will be very limited. I also need to determine correct cable routing

Thanks, Ruben. But, they won't match my black CRG's. :crash

tough times, but im glad you got through mate.
Thanks, much appreciated. :beer

I need to get back to working on her again. I've been busy with too many things lately. Picked up a replacement rim last weekend, so need to get going on her. Should give a friend of mine a call and see if we can press the new bearing into place when I'm off on Friday.

Been a while since I posted up. Haven't had much of a chance to work on the bike due to a lot going on. Was supposed to do a half ironman at the end of June, but had to back out due to tearing meniscus in my right knee, a job change, and a few other things keeping me more than occupied.

Yesterday, finally got some new tires put on before getting some archery practice in...

Managed to get out into the garage for a bit today. Did some front end work, then had to order some parts for the bike. Not much, but hoping to be done by end of month so I can make a couple of days at DCTC before hitting the big track Figured I'm going to hold off on some of the more extensive work until later this year when I have more time, instead of losing yet another year to not making it on the track...

Just dropped my wheels off to get bearings replaced....

#34 · (Edited)
Just picked my wheels from having new bearings installed. :rock

#36 ·
May be a stupid question, but why did you have the bearings replaced?

#37 ·
Not stupid at all. When I pulled the wheels, I saw a slight orange colouring to the grease. Which, to me was an indication of potential rust. Rather than run the risk of a bearing seize or burn up, I opted to buy new and replace. It was a cheap insurance at about $125 or so. I was going to do the work myself. But, dropped it off at a friend to have done.

#38 · (Edited)
Some parts came in. :rock

Though, I think I might have forgotten to order a set of seals. :(

#41 ·
Okay, so I figured it out. I don't need the dust seals when running Fast Frank's captive spacers. Which means I have an extra set of oil seals and dust seals for the front wheel. So, those are installed, and attempted to install the wheel. No go. The axle seems to get hung up on the middle collar, the one between the bearings. I've attempted to push it out of the way and centered, but no luck. It's like a 1/16th of an inch to on way and it catches on the axle. I could attempt to tap the axle in. But, don't want to risk damage on anything...

Ideas?

#42 · (Edited)
Front wheel is on, just needed a little "love tap" per se. Calipers, fender and safety wires/clips are back on. Have Fast Frank's captive spacers installed.

Image

Went to install the rear wheel, but ran into an issue there now too. Not sure if I have the captive spacers on the wrong sides. But, package wasn't marked, and I installed them based upon the thickness of the OEM spacers. Email sent inquiring.
